I am slowly piecing together a new rig and had a memory question.

So far I have the following components:

-Asus P5B Deluxe
-C2D e6600 - Water cooled with swiftech's Apogee block.

Now I was wondering what would be the best RAM for this setup.
I want to overclock it as much as possible. I was thinking 2-3 GB of memory, 2 for sure, then maybe an upgrade to 3 a little later.

Any suggestions?

On another topic, what kind of overclocking has been achieved with a water cooled e6600?

Thanks in advance.

800mhz to overclock and cl4 if possible or else cl5. Just take your pick from any of the main brands: geil, corsair, OCZ... and list them down so ppl can comment about them.

I would aim at 4.5Ghz (but my goals have reputation to be quite extreme).
The Apogee isnt the best block of its class sadly, get the STROM if you have a high pressure pump or the Cooltechnica MP-05 otherwise.

DDR2-800 with 4-4-4-xx timings as a minimun, any brand will do. Just stay away from Patriot as they have a questionable reputation in this segment.

Sorry for interjecting here, but aren't you also a bit skittish about G.Skill (PK) as well?

Somewhat, but only if youre aiming at over 450Mhz, OCZ Gold could be in this cathegory too. But Patriot at times has trouble reaching up to that... note that this doesnt happend in all modules tough.

HZ>PK>ZX :D (copied from Darios sign)

We've both learned from mistakes, right?

Uh? yeah that was based on overclockability. Since the ZX is really hard to find I barely ever had to talk about it. Actually, the HZ is the only one using Microns.

Well newegg is out of the HZ and it is sort of out of my price range at $305.

Newegg has the PK at $200 so I guess I am going to try that.

What is odd is both the HZ and the PK are:
Cas Latency: 4
Heat Spreader: Yes
Timing: 4-4-4-12
Voltage: 2.0V-2.1V

Possibly the HZ pricing is out of date? This ram will be used in a C2D 6400 on a DS3 and well see how the OC goes.

My take on HZs. Get PKs only if youre aiming at no more than 425Mhz FSB.

Are you saying that one will likely only get 425Mhz if they keep the timings at 4? Or are you saying that 425MHz is the likely max even if they relax them to 5?

Right now, I'm edging towards buying 4 1GB sticks of G.Skill DDR2 800 @ 4-4-4-12 timings (for about $400 on Newegg right now).

Instead of getting incredibly low timed memory, why don't you get twice as much decent memory instead? I'm sure a little more speed and better timings cannot compete with twice the amount of memory!

Depends on what you are doing.

Im saying that the PK modules show very erratic overclocking behavior, sometimes the reach 500Mhz with just slacking timings and sometimes they have a very hard time reaching ~450Mhz with slacked timings and high voltages.
This is due that this line doesnt normally use Micron chips.

I considered HZs at first. But I just tough some D9GKX would be more fun :D

Ok I took this quote from that thread you linked.

I did some googling and I am not sure what D9GKX means. I assume it has to do with the ram modules?

Currently I'm going CNPS9700 C2D 6400 on a DS3 (haven't placed my newegg order yet). I'm not sure how high my FSB will go air cooled? 450? Relaxing timers sucks but which is more important speed or a little relaxing?

I still am sort of planning to go with the PK since the mushkin of equal timings are $90 more or $60 more after rebate. I'm pretty tapped for money since this system will cost $1200 or $1080 after rebates. Should I look into the 533 PC2 4200 to save a little cash?

I haven't OCed since the 366 slot1 celeron peltier days and I plan to have a lot of fun with this C2D.

First get to the speed you need with slacked timings, then you may be able to afford some 4s in there. But trust me, even 10Mhz FSB will give you more performance than lower timings.

Only if you dont want to OC.
OCZ Platinum Rev2 for you $210 and amazing potential.

Alright from my reading GKX is the best?

Well I found this handy list DDR2 RAM list and even though the Rev2 isn't listed the Rev1 is listed as GKX. This list might be out of date because i found several forums the mentioned that the HZ is now GMH whereas the list still shows them as GKX.

I guess CPUZ will tell me when I get the modules in a few days. Anyways you know the difference between the Revs other then the timing went down from 4-5-4-15 to 4-4-4-15? I couldn't find anything else on it.

Normaly GKX>GMH, however high binned GMH>low binned GKX (Mushkin Redline XP8000 = high binned GMH).

It is said on XtremeSystems.org that GKX is excellent ocable for low volts, and GMH is excellent for high volts.

Very true. GKX will start eating volts above 2.3v (but of course youre hitting very high OCs by then), while GMH is scalable up to ~2.5v.
