Hello, I'm looking for a decent tv turner that ranging maybe from $30 to $50. I'm going to use it to route my cable tv into my pc system. Recording tv show is optional I guess. Any suggestion? It's going to be my first tv turner, and I have to say, it's not my domain, so any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

If you plan on watching analog TV (especially cable) on your PC monitor, you will be very dissappointed!

Analog NTSC on a computer monitor especially if it is a LCD will look terrible! Better off with a DVD recorder or a HDD recorder: TiVo or the like.

Have you considered a HD tuner? In two years, OTA analog will be gone!

yes I do have a 19" LCD at resolution of 1280x1024. So, tv tuner is not going to work well for me?

Standard resolution of basic cable is only 800x600. So the image will be a bit grainy when maximized to fill your screen. That's just the way it is.

most of rvmb and avi movies are less than 800x600 right when they are being ripped. Is cable tv going to look worst than rvmb and avi?

Yes, don't forget to factor in the noise level from cable unless you have a well above average signal and live within a few amps of the HE.

Even with a MyHD120 tuner (hardware based) a HD channel doesn't even look that great using a DVI cable! If your video card has capyure capibilities try feeding even a camcorder signal into the monitor and see what it looks like.

"rvmb"?? :?:

rvmb and rm are formats uses by RealPlayer.
I do not have a camcorder to use.
So the conclusion is that tv tuner is going to look suck and I'm better off without it?

Your 19" LCD will be just fine.

If your video signal is DIGITAL, you will get a good picture.

If your video signal is ANALOG, your picture will be lesser quality.

Your TV signal is only 480 lines of resolution, so if you size the picture to "full screen" and watch it from a normal monitor viewing distance, it will appear grainy. If you watch it from a normal TV viewing distance, it wll be OK... just like "normal TV"

If you make a small window to view the TV from a normal monitor viewing distance, the the picture will appear much better (especially if digital signal).

The Hauppauge Win-TV GO and any of it's versions is in your price range. With a digital signal, it is quite good.

If you want to spend a bit more or can catch a rebate deal, the Hauppauge Win TV-PVR 150 gets good reviews from buyers. It has an upgraded 10-bit decoder (the Win-TV GO has an 8-bit).

Good luck.

Look at some analog stations (feeds) on small LCD flat panel monitors in some local stores and tell me it looks "fine".

I just bought the Hauppauge WinTV-150 PVR MCE Kit (with remote) for 100$CAD and i'm using it on a 32" 16:9 Samsung LCD TV and yes the image looks a bit "streched" but nothing more, Yes a bit grainy but that's the way Analog and Digital (Non-HD since over here there charging a ridiculous premium for it..) will look on 16:9 displays...And if you plan on using it on a PC monitor, i dont't see where you would be disapointed.
My 2 cents.

I use this with a spare 19"widescreen acer monitor and logitech x230 speakers, video quality is excellent!I bought it about 6 months ago for about 70$ cdn,not sure how much of a difference an internal tuner is,but this one works great.and it is a tv only now.

This is my fisrt time posting, mainly because I am interested in the subject I have 2 TV tuners in my pc 1 ADS Instant HDTV PCI (PTV-380-EF) which is as implied by its name a digital tuner wich also has an analog tuner you can choose which one to view I also have an Hauppauge 250 and belive me the digital feed is awesome the picture is crystal clear on my 19" CRT yes analog is a little bit grainy but not to the point where its bothersome I use Beyond TV as my PVR so all my shows are recorded perfectely. One thing that I could tell you is that I don't watch the shows in full screen most of the time because I'm always doing something on the PC but when I do the image is clear especially if I'm watching OTA HD Feeds

Analogue looks crap on any kind of screen because the signal strength is crap, end.

@amdwilliam1985 I've got a Kworld tuner card similar to the one in mpilchfamily's link, its the DVBT version with a digital satellite box plugged in, the picture is crisp (1280x1024@75Hz) the colours are fine and dandy, and the price was spot on, you can't go far wrong with one mate.

To make a statement as that is beyond incorrect. According to that statement, analog always has a "crap" signal strength. Sorry to inform you, but signal strength can vary with any RF transmission, be it radio or TV, analog or digital. Actually what what it is and how ol;d the system is, analog can and will look good with a proper signal on a CRT type of television (monitor).

I have an AIW x800 XT coming ups tomorrow actually.

I also have Digital Cable from MediaCom.

I have a solid connection straight from the source,
then split right by my cable modem. Half to the modem,
half, as of tomorrow, to the AIW.

Its already split, and I get like 5 megs down, so the connection
is VERY solid.

My question is what will my picture look like?
I have the solid connection.
I have the digital cable.

Is the AIW x800xt have digital tuner or analog?
If so, do all I do is screw the cable in and she
will be rockin?

I've installed enough systems and seen enough pictures on screens to decide for myself that analogue is not the best way to broadcast a moving image, unless you are at the optimum distance from the transmitter you will not get a perfect picture on all channels, there will always be some degree of ghosting or flecking call it what you will, but it will always be there, but I don't see that with a digital feed, be it on a CRT or an LCD as mentioned in your previous post.
