I have not had a PDA with wifi before. I have a D-Link wireless router
DI-624 attached to my destktop PC via ethernet and as far as I know
wireless is active (how would I know?)

I turn on wifi on my ASUS a730w and I cannot browse the web (I can if
the ASUS is cradled - I'm guessing at that point it is using the wired
connection) The PDA does not acknowledge that it has found a wifi
connection, nothing appears in My network places no web access is
available.

Is there a step by step guide for those very new to wifi anywhere that
someone can point me to? or maybe someone can give me a few tips on
the obvious to look for.

Jane, here are a few wireless basics to check:

1) Please check your router handbook and use your desktop PC web-browser to
access your DI-624 router maintenance pages (using IP 192.168.0.1 or
similar) to confirm it is automatically assigning an IP address to your PDA
and that your PDA is actually accessing the router.

2) Check the router settings to confirm that the wireless mode is on the
expected channel with the expected SSID and is not WEP encrypted. Check also
that the firewall is not blocking your PDA from the internet.

3) Check your PDA network card settings to confirm that it will accept a
router-assigned IP address and that the network card is allowed to access
the internet.

Good Luck

This page (and the linked pages) are very helpful, and conveniently,
is formatted for save-as and viewing on a PDA ;-))
