I am looking to buy a PDA/Handheld so that I can download the Autoroute 2005 programme onto it through a 1Gb SD Card.
Is it true that the PDA needs to run a windows programme to get this to work, and how much memory should I be looking for to enable this to work?
I only want to use this as a digital map rather than carry paper maps everywhere I go. I have seen the new HPrx3715 IPAQ which seems to be quite good but is a bit out of my price range.
I was told by staff at PC World that I would need 128mb to allow it to run smoothly. Is this true or can I use smaller RAM?
I know nothing about this product or programme and am not very tecchie with PC's so any response would be great but please keep them in simple terms or show explanations. Sorry for appearing a bit thick but everyone has to start learning from nothing at some time.
Many thanks.

I use the USA version of AutoRoute to do just what you require - load areas
onto my iPAQ.

The iPAQ comes with (Pocket) Windows already so you need no more software.
It should also come with ActivSync which you use to copy maps (and copy
anything else you desire) from desk computer to iPAQ.

1 GB card should be ample, mine is only 256 MB. Beware that Autoroute may
only permit you to load bits of the UK at a time, rather than say all of
England as 1 file. Just means you might need to highlight the areas to copy
over 7 or 8 times to get all of England.

My PPC is over a year old and maybe has 128 MB memory. Look for the model
you want on the internet, say gps solutions.co.uk or something like that.
Will more than likely be £50 cheaper than PW expensive World.

No PDA actually runs Autoroute. It runs a companion program called Pocket
Streets which is provided with it. The process is that you clip maps of
particular areas in the desktop Autoroute and copy those clips to the Pocket
PC. The Pocket version doesn't have near the capability that Autoroute on
the desktop has, but is a pretty effective electronic map. It can store
pushpins, personal points of interest, and can search for locations, by
place name or address. It does not do routing however. The majority of PPCs
come with 64M of memory and that is perfectly acceptable to run Pocket
Streets. The additional memory you will want, in the form of a SD card, is
to store the map files. If you take a look at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmo [...] ge=english
you will find UK maps the MS has made available to get an idea of the size
of individual files. Note that with Autoroute you will be able to cut what
ever map you wish, but there are size limits to the individual files. The
size is partly on square area and on density if information. You will be
able to get larger areas covered in rural areas than in the city.

There are many programs with much more capability than Pocket Streets, but
they also cost more. You might visit www.gpspassion.com to see the wide
variety. That site tends to deal with GPS use with PPCs, but any of the
mapping programs can be used without a GPS.

As for particular PPCs, I'd stick with ones that run WM2003 or WM2003SE at
this point, but beyond that, I don't think there is one that wouldn't run
Pocket Streets effectively.

Actually there was AutoRoute V-1.0 that runs on a Psion 3a/c/mx. Some
would call these small computers a PDA.

The program and data is held on a SSD card. (Psion's own card that
lead to the CF type of card)

I've still got a copy.
