Was reading up on the topic of MRAM and instant on computing. Old news, yes i know. Couldn't this already be done by installing some sort of flash memory on the motherboard and allowing the slotted RAM to be used for other functions? I'm aware this would probably increase mb prices by $60 or so (assuming 1 gb flash cards go for about $70). I would pay that premium for instant on computing though.

Windows is already trying to implement a form of this for their readyboot (or readyboost, I'm still confused) feature in their new Santa Rosa chipset for laptops, supposed to boot into windows some odd % higher (50% or so I've heard, could be wrong)

As for instant on... isin't that what standby is for? :D

I guess instead of just providing minimal power to memory when you standby, you could save it all to a flash drive, and it would be like hibernate with standby speed... shrug.

Any other people have thoughts on this?

I use hibernate on my comp and boot/shut down is in the 10-15 sec range. Not quite "instant" but close. One thing I've found is be aware of what loads up during the boot process. How many "sevices", and other things are always going, ( Do you use Norton, an Ad-Blocker or the like. ). There are many utilities that can use, check out answersthatwork.com, lots of interesting info.

Yea they could probably make this work but its a bit more involved then you think and a lot more expensive as a result. Eventually we will have something but not a for a while probably.

I use hibernate too :)

It will just be nice when i can just flip a light switch to turn computer on/off

The hibernate feature is the closest thing to that on my Gateway laptop so I also use it.
Without it, I'd have to go do something else for awhile after I start it as it's 4200RPM HDD is just awful.
Really, it doesn't matter and I wouldn't pay much, if any extra on my 3800+ desktop which starts in about 30 seconds.

They now how PCI card "RAM Drives" that your motherboard recognizes as Hard Disk controller, it has a battery on it that works for a relatively limited amount of time, afterwhich all your data on said RAM Drive is erased. The trade off being you have a hard drive that has near 0 seek time and can max out the PCI bus on bandwidth, its as instant on as your processor and mobo can handle. They are quite expensive though.
