Thecus makes an affordable and ingenious storage solution to get some usable mileage out of 2.5\" hard disks you might have laying around. The option to back up files directly from your digital camera and MP3 player makes it more than just another enclosure.

Speaking from the point of a serious amateur photographer who shoots RAW & hence gets ~90 shots to a 1Gb CF card the problem with the Thecus Yes is that it has to be connected to the camera to backup (probably about a 6 minute job) thereby meaning that you can't be shooting whilst it's doing that.
Other devices such as the Jobo Giga One incorporate a card reader so that you can switch cards & keep on shooting whilst it backs up your images.
Even better you can actually buy the chassis of these (there's obviously 1 or 2 factories churning them out in slight variatons for different brands) for little more than the Thecus & fit your own hdd as with the Thecus.

P.S. in case anybody is wondering about the need I & others can easily shoot 800-1000 pics in a day e.g at an airshow - my homebuild "Giga One alike" has already paid for itself in not having to buy another 4Gb or so of CF.

How about a device like this that has USB ability, plus card reading, plus an internal battery, plus a display... Admittedly it is a 'knockoff' product from HK, but its got features that just aren't offered yet in the US market. I am not a shill for fifthunit and I do not condone buying their products. Make your own decisions.

that's one of the devices of which I spoke ...
I'm sure that you can get similar features in the US market already e.g. the Jobo Giga 1 (btw look at things like the placement of the various ports on that Digimate & the Jobo), SmartDisk PhotoBank etc.

Hi, I just purchased the Thecus YES Nano N1050 OTG along with the Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 2.5 hard drive. However, I heard that the Thescus YES Nano have trouble running Hitachi drives that run at 7,200 rpm and now I'm worried if these two will be incompatible. Has anyone heard about this? And perhaps know a solution?

I bought a thecus N1050 this week as I was impressed by the article in TH. As an external HD it works fine ( but i did'nt buy it for that, there are other cheaper or more performant solutions to be had. I cannot make the OTG digital photo registration feature work. Tried everything, changed hd, used cardreader, canon digicams (G3 and powershot s2is).No avail! The copy button does nothing! No reaction from the HD.The HD inside was a fujitsu 60 gb from jan 2006.I tried other brands (hitachi). The Thecus has probably not been sold so well in Belgium and remained in stock at the supplier.Could there be a firmware upgrade since then? I don't find any on the thecus site, but I fear the worst.
