I've been out of the pc world for quite sometime now and I just got back into the scene just a few weeks ago. I however have found myself confused on a few things. I guess for starters AMD's new chipsets have me scratching my head in attempts to figure out why the chips are named after certain cities. I see some named San Diego, Clawhammer, Venice, Winsor, Orleans, Paris, Newcastle etc. I'm just curious as to what they mean?

:? *crickets* ...

Does the name changes have anything to do with the amount of L2 cache each chipset has?

Example

Venice 3800 has an L2 of 512

while a

San Diego has an L2 of 1mb

i just look at the amount of L2 cache the CPU has

like u said

Venice = 512k

San Diego = 1mb

AMD 64 X2

Toledo = 2x1mb

Manchester = 2x512

Here's the breakdown:

Socket 939:
Venice (Atlhon 64) Single-Core 512KB Cache
San Diego (Atlhon 64) Single-Core 1MB Cache

Manchester (Atlhon 64 X2) Dual-Core 512KB Cache
Toledo (Atlhon 64 X2) Dual-Core 1MB Cache

Venus (Opteron) Single-Core 1MB Cache
Denmark (Opteron) Dual-Core 1MB Cache

Socket AM2:
Orleans (Atlhon 64) Single-Core 512KB Cache
Windsor (Atlhon 64 X2) Dual-Core 1MB Cache
Manila (Sempron 64) Single-Core 128-256KB Cache
Santa Ana (Opteron) Dual-Core 1MB Cache

Hope this helps.

Those names don't refer to the chipsets; they refer to the CPUs themselves (In case that point hasn't been made). The names are internal AMD codenames that refer to diiferent cores and variations. The variations between these cores include name, onboard cache, process size, # of cores, features and instruction sets, etc.

Note: If two cores appear to be the same, they may differ by TDP (How much heat they dissipate).

Awesome list, but there were never 200 and 800 series (Italy/Egypt) socket 939 cores were there?

Reply to darkstar782

well thats a great list but i have a question i have a amd athlon 3200+ s.939
now i know there is no 3200+ San Diego but when i check on CPUZ it says San Diego... so can you explane and i my L2 cache is 512k?

Reply to melarcky

do you have the latest version of cpuz?

Reply to illicitsc

that i know of
where can i get a new version?

Reply to melarcky

thanks i just got the newest version of CPUZ and it still says San Diego
lol

Reply to melarcky

what is the stepping of your chip on the Integrated Heatsink of the cpu? if it ends in BP its a venice no doubt.

that is from PC WIZARD 06 ... do i have some werid CPU? lol

Reply to melarcky

Maybe, this is a hunch, when they discontinued the 1mb cache product line, they chopped off half the cache a sandiego and renamed it. So cpuz still sees sandiego

Reply to illicitsc

maybe .... it doesnt really bother me... its not like the Cpu isnt working good or anythinglike that its just strange... you know :)

I don't know how I missed that. But yes, I believe 2-Way and 8-Way cores are only available for 940.
