I am thinking of buying the new I-mate pocket pc phone EVDO version.
I want to use either Telstra or Vodafone (capped plans) as my phone provider
and e-mail/inernet surfing with it.

What is the best way to go ? It is a bit confusing, Vodafone use the GPRS
network for internet and e-mail (which the EVDO isnt compatible with) and
Telstra use CDMA ?>

Can someone assist ?

Well according to the tech guys, GPRS is the goring forward format that is
more
widely used... CDMA has method of catch-up and may be offered..

Me I like standards used widely

This is quite complex... GPRS is way slower than EVDO, and even WCDMA (the
one after GPRS) is still about the same as a slow EVDO connection.

However faster, the EVDO option lacks in roaming options. If you are
travelling to Europe you must get the GPRS version. There's no EVDO there.
If you go to USA, or South Korea, or New Zealand, then you have to check if
Telstra offers data roaming in these markets (I doubt, CDMA operators are
not very well known for their roaming options).

So, either you have speed and no roaming, or you have a slower connection
with options to use.

Don't worry about WCDMA (3G on GSM networks) yet, since there are no Windows
Mobile device (currently) that can use it - but they're coming :)
