Alternative to IPAQ power dongle
Forum PDA : Windows Mobile - Alternative to IPAQ power dongle
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.pocketpc (More info?)
Just starting to look for replacement for my trusty Casio EM500 so
paying more attention at the pocketpc displays.
YIKES. I hadn't realized that the IPAQ's had to use such a large
adapter/dongle to plug the power cord into the ppc when not using the
base. That "rig" is massive! AND it looks like it's also got so much
leverage that it would be easy to do major damage to the IPAQ slot.
I assume the ac adapter doubles for the cradle so they had to use an
adapter to fit the socket on the ppc but 1) why couldn't they have used
a separate power socket on the ppc like everybody else or 2) make the
cradle accept the same type of connector that's on the bottom of the ppc
so the ac adapter could still use just one?
Don't they realize/care that some people might actually need to USE the
ppc WITH IT PLUGGED IN? I've used the Casio probably hundreds of times
with the ac adapter attached. Sometimes at my desk when it's charging
but even more often in bed or a chair while reading an ebook--the low
battery indicator comes on, plug in adapter, keep on reading. But
that's with the power cord coming out the top corner with a normal
socket--the cord is out of the way and can be pretty much ignored. But
just looking at the IPAQ setup I think that mess at the bottom would be
smack in the way sticking so far down like that.
What do IPAQ owners think? Is it a hassle? Is it in the way? Does it
break? Is there an alternative--maybe a 3rd party power cord that comes
with it's own dedicated plug that plugs directly into the ppc and
doesn't use the dongle thing? I did a Google search but didn't find
anything using every keyword combo I could think of--reference? Anybody
make their own?

we use a cord that is a USB cable to the desktop system here at the museum
most of the time.... the ipaq ( at least this rx3715) can charge over
USB......
I bought this cord off eBay for like 4 dollars and something... as I
remember...

Ah-ha. USB was the keyword I wasn't using. Found a charge/sync cable
with IPAQ adapter on one end, USB on the other, with matching AC and car
adapters that the USB plugs into when you don't have the pc. Still not
as compact as the mini-plug on my Casio but better than that disaster I
saw on the IPAQ. Even had one for the Cingular SX66 pocketpc phone I'm
still trying to see locally.

Cool retractable cables.
The ipaq adapters are just more revenue for HP!

Similar to the ones I found later--in fact a bit too much similar.
Products are almost identical even the spare pen/stylus. Anyone know
who's reselling what?

I agree with all your comments except the one quoted below. Unfortunately
most everyone else is using this adapter concept. My new Dells are the same,
Loox does the same...I think it is a way to reduce the size of the device
just a little, by not having to have space for the power socket. Not a lot I
know, but every little bit helps appease the consumer desire for
smaller...at the expense of hauling another losable component, and all the
other issues you cite. Glad you have found the ZipLinq style cables. They
are very convenient. Do be aware that many folks are making these, they are
not all just re-branded versions from the same OEM. There are quality
differences, sometimes in correspondence to price. I have had good luck with
the genuine ZipLinq and the ones from www.pc-mobile.net
