Budget: $750 maximum but less is always welcome.
Build: PC and Keyboard/Mouse Only (IE no display or speakers)
Components I Currently Own: Windows Media Center 2005 SP2, 32" LCD HDTV (1366x768 native) with HDMI Input and Sony 5.1 with Optical and Coaxial Inputs.
Uses: Want to use it for surfing web, listening to music, watching high definition videos (I don't actually mean it needs HD-DVD or BluRay, just a processor capable of playing WMV-HD or general downloaded HD movies), hobbyist graphic and video work, very limited gaming (as most my gaming is done on my 360) and if at all possible I would like it to run Vista well as I intend on upgrading my OS in a couple years.

My laptop is busted and outdated as it can't process high definition videos and I don't really need a laptop now that I've graduated college.

I appreciate any help you all can provide me! Thanks in advance! :)

With a $750 budget This should be very doable. I assume that you're also after ultra quiet operation and a "smallish" form factor, or at least something that blends into a multimedia environment?

/me rubs chin

Let me do a little bit of digging around on newegg and see what I can turn up (I love a good challenge!)

I appreciate it and the case doesn't have to be anything really fancy, just don't want a full tower, at the very least. I guess size before style. Also, I edited my build explanation to say that I would like the system to be able to run Vista somewhat well.

I'm cool with factoring in eBay prices that will probably bring the build price to about 20% less, I'm assuming...

Reply to K1LLTACULAR

ah gotcha; for some reason I was envisioning a HTPC setup (eg. Antec Fusion case that retails for about $200).

I'll spec a rig out for you . . . I'll post something here in about twenty minutes.

<wrinkles nose> Used stuff is kind of a bad idea . . . with an online retailer (newegg, zipzoomfly, ewiz, etc.) you at least know that the stuff you are buying hasn't been abused and can be RMA'ed if defective.

But that's just my opinion, take it for what it's worth.

Reply to nikolokolus

I mean new off eBay. :) For example, my HDTV is a Panasonic TC-32LX60 which retails for about $1350 before shipping and I got it for $900 w/shipping brand new. Of course, the dude had a terrible description of it so nobody really bid on it but he had a good feedback rating so I gambled and got a major deal. :) You can get mislabeled Buy It Nows that have just been posted or simply great competition on eBay which yields great prices on brand new items.

Reply to K1LLTACULAR

Just ignore the eBay price comment and just keep it under budget, please. Less complicated that way. Again, thanks for the help.

Well Here is a sample rig to start with.

I'm sure if you hunted around long enough you could probably find better deals on some of the stuff, but probably overall within $30 here or there.

Case: Antec P150 (with 430 watt PSU) ~$150 here
Motherboard: Asus M2N-E socket AM2 ~$95 here
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ (single core) ~$110 here
RAM: 1GB (2X512) patriot DDR2 667 ~$90 here
Video card: Sapphire X1600pro (with HDMI out) ~150 here
HD: Seagate barracuda 320 gb SATAII ~$100 here
DVD-RW: Samsung, BenQ, NEC are all good and relatively quiet ~$30- $35
FLoppy: If you want one can be found for $10-$15

All the above listed came out to about $760 on Newegg (including shipping, DVD-RW and floppy)

EDIT:
Also wanted to add a couple of notes. This machine will be Vista compliant but by the time vista comes out I would strongly urge buying another GB of RAM. This build will be exceptionally quiet (with the antec p150), allow you to play some games (though the video card was selected for its HDMI feature rather than gaming performance.), and fit the needs you have for it. It is after all a budget build, but I'd say it's actually closer to Mid-range in performance and features.

Thanks a million for the help! Also, is it worth a couple extra bucks to go with a 2.8 Ghz Pentium D?

Questions/Concerns

Does the onboard sound have optical or coaxial output so it can send a source to my Sony reciever?

Possible changes:

Smaller HDD at 200 Gigs:

Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3200827AS 200GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6822148113

This probably won't even work as it's a microATX case which I think you have to have a mATX mobo to match... seems like a nice case though for really cheap:

Antec Solution Series NSK2400 Black/Silver Steel MicroATX Desktop Computer Case 380W ATX12V v2.0 Power Supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811129014

If converting from DVI to HDMI is easy then this card seems really good:

DIAMOND X1600PCIE512SB Radeon X1600PRO 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card - OEM

I bought a D 820 off ebay and a cheap board too, just to see if it could beat my old Socket A Athlon XP 2600. Its faster, but not that much. I´d bet the 3800 will leave the 820 behind in every game.
Yet i´m quite fond of it. I never had a pentium system and always wanted a dual core so i got this thing cheap - and that´s exactly what it is. Boots fast, does really good with apps but gaming is (with my 6800 XT and 1 Gig Ram) only "okay". I´d suggest one of the 9xx, especially the 9x5 ones if it has to be a Pentium D.

Overall I´d stick with your Athlon though.

Cool. The idea of true multitasking was just really cool sounding but I guess I don't really do too much hardcore multitasking so whatever. :)

Any comments on my proposed changes?

Also, what's with "Perpendicular Recording Technology" found in this Seagate Barracuda?

Here's a pic of the motherboard that shows all of the I/O panel connectors (under specs it lists 1X coaxial for S/PDIF out)

Whatever your storage needs are then go with that, I only picked the 320 GB model because right now it is the "sweet spot" in terms of $/GB

Right. If you want that case then you'll need to find a mATX motherboard to go with it . . . If you want to save a little bit of money (about $60) you could opt for the NSK4400 instead of the P150

To be honest I don't have much experience with HDMI stuff, so I'm not the best person to ask about which is better.

As far as your other question about getting an Intel chip vs. the Athlon 64: you certainly could do that (along with a motheboard swap), but for your price range that Athlon is going to probably give you the most bang for your buck at $110. The real problem with the Pentium D series is their high thermal output and somewhat lackluster performance compared to the Athlon 64 (in certain applications).

Change the CPU to an Athlon 64 X2 3800+. Since you're not going to be gaming, why not change the video card to the Gigabyte Radeon X1300 Silent Pipe II. It's close to the performance of the X1600 (512MB of VRAM doesn't do sh!t for performance), and it's passively cooled, which means no fan noise. The money that you save on the video card will offset the extra $41 for the dual-core CPU.

Will that GPU be sufficient for use with Vista and my hobbyist Photoshop and Premiere use as well as HD Video? I think the dual core would be a nice upgrade. That's a nice savings on the GPU! Puts my project at a much nicer $660.

Yes.

Awesome. My mom hasn't given me a graduation present yet and I think this computer is calling my name... ;)

EDIT: Is this new CPU socket compatible with the mobo I have listed right now?

Reply to K1LLTACULAR

Just make sure the X2 3800+ you get uses socket AM2 and not socket 939 and you'll be all set.

Thanks a lot for the help, ya'll. :D
