Viewing MS Access files on Pocket PC - help needed
Forum PDA : Windows Mobile - Viewing MS Access files on Pocket PC - help needed
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.pocketpc (More info?)
I wonder if you can help me.
I have some databases that were created in Microsoft Access and I need to
read them on my Pocket PC.
I transferred the Access files to my Pocket PC and they were converted to
..cdb files.
A lot of people say there is plenty of free software available that will
allow you to read Access files on a Pocket PC but they didn't say what it
was. I have searched for a number of days and I have not found any
appropriate free software.
Could someone please tell me where I can download some free software that
will enable me to read my Access database files (i.e. .cdb files) on my
Pocket PC? Also what is the name of the free software?
I hope you can help me,
Happy Christmas.
Thanks!

Neil,
DDH Software's HanDBase will allow you to read Access files. You can get
more information here: http://www.ddhsoftware.com/handbase.html
It is not free and I do not know of any free Access DB readers but I am
familar with this product and it works well.

Try www.pocketgear.com. Typically, you'll have to pay but you always get
what you pay for. Of particular interest will be DB Anywhere. I STRONGLY
recommend it.

As the others have mentioned, there's no free ride for Access
on your PPC. Mickeysoft decided to abandon database users
for whatever reason.
I looked at several DB programs for the PPC before I settled on
SprintDB Pro. In addition to the program for the PPC, they also
offer a desktop program where you can build your application for
the PPC.

Hmm... HanDBase is my favorite datatbase on the Pocket PC. But, I don't
think it can read CDB files directly. I think the desktop component can
convert the MDB to a PDB though.
Moreover, and this is true for all of the Pocket PC databases, relations and
macros/VBA scripts will all be lost in translation...todd

Todd,
Your right, it won't read CDB files as far as I know. But it will allow
users to read an Access file and convert it as you state.

And was it a bad thing that MS decided to leave us alone when it came to
pocket Access?

No it wasn't IMHO. We had a significant number of good Access and Powerpoint
options for the PPC way before we had any decent replacements for Pocket
Word and Pocket Excel. I figure that is largely because of the hole left by
MS for those former two Office types.
As for free Access support take a look at http://www.grandasoft.com/ I
haven't tried it myself, purely for lack of time, and a personal like of
SprintDB, but I hear good things about it.

No way! It has allows for other developers to fill these needs in a way -
my opinion - that is far better than Microsoft could have on their own.
Need an example? Compare Pocket Word and SoftMaker's TextMaker. 'Nuff

I'll second that motion. DBAnywhere is first-rate. After buying it a week
or two ago I found a small bug in it and the author e-mailed me a patched
version of the executable the following morning. Now *that* is service.
Worth every penny of the meager cost ($26).

What was the bug and how did you contact the author?

It was a *_good_* thing for the folks who are able to
produce and retail database programs, because they
don't have to compete with the 800 pound gorilla.
I would tend to believe MS did not do the typical user a favor.

For the records, I was trying to be facetious(sp?).

If you had tried Pocket PowerPoint and Pocket Access, produced by MS and
included on Handheld PCs, you would see that MS did do the user a favor by
leaving the field open for third party developers, though I would expect not
intentionally. The PowerPoint and Access versions on handhelds are every bit
as faithful to their big brothers as Pocket Word and Pocket Excel are. 'Nuff
