Hey, i just ordered my a widescreen LCD and i plan on replaying all of my favorite games. I have a VisionTek Xtasy X850XT PE in AGP. My current processor and motherboard are an amd 2800+ and an ASUS. i also have 1GB of PDP dual channel 3200 ram. I am looking at picking up an amd 64 3800+, and a motherboard with agp. ive been looking at some with ULI. What is that? Any motherboard suggestions?

If you are buying at this time NEW MoBo it is useless to look for one with AGP just because you think you will save few bucks.

Sell your old rig and get yourself a totally NEW set with AMD X2 and DDR 2 RAM.

AGP cards are inferior to PCIe, and it would be a waste of money to attempt to save few dollars while newer equipment is available at fraction of cost.

After the AMD X2 price cut AMD CPU Pricing there is no reason to go single core when AMD Athlon64 X2 5000+ costa now less than Athlon64 X2 3800 + a week ago.

The PCIe video card you can pick up for less than U$ 100.00, and DDR2 is getting damn cheap also.

Just get all stuff new with the possibility to upgrade in a near future to AMD 65 nano quad.
The 939 is a great socket but it became already absolute.

Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (socket AM2 only) costs now only $152
Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (socket AM2 and 939) costs now $187
Opteron Dual-Core Model 265 costs only $316!

Why not move to AM2 with Pcie and be in position to be able to go later with quad?

Well if you want a good alternative at a reasonable price point then check out these two

The Asrock 939 Dual-Sata2 not an am2 board but you can use your existing Ram and Graphics card. If you wish to upgrade your graphics card later the board has PCI-E as well.

Neither the PCI-E or the agp are crippled, I have been running on of these for the last nine months with out issue.

The second option is a new board by Asrock called the 939 Dual-VSTA which is essentialy the same board with improved sound to support windows Vista.

There is an option to upgrade the board via an add on board to take am2 chips but I would expect it would be cheaper to purchase a new board later.

If you are concerned about the quality of these boards, Asrock is part of Asus.

The asrock dual sata II will work fine. It can use either agp or pci-e cards.

There's also the ECS alternative, K8T890. has both x16 and AGP. And it's cheap as dirt. You can ebay them brand new for like $30 or 40 because Fry's bundles them with CPUs. The current deal is $199 for X2 3800+. It comes up often.

The better deal though, if you're looking to upgrade everything is what I got last night-

X2 4200+ and a KN1 SLI Lite for $229. At least that's something you can use for a while.

ps. unlike others' anecdotal evidence, I've never had the least bit of trouble with ECS boards (though this is the first one I'm going to be running as my primary machine). I kinda like them.

I must agree I had, up until recently, a D6Vaa P3 Dual processor board that ran 24/7 for five straight years with out issue,

sold the PC as no longer required.
