Enabling flight mode will disable transmitters in your device that may
interfere with aircraft navigation systems (wifi, phone service, etc -
I'm not sure whether or not bluetooth is included in the list).

Flight mode disables all radios (wifi,bt,cellular) in the pda. Rather than
shutting down each radio individually, chosing flight mode will do it in one
step.

Flight mode disables all transmitters. It is well-proven that private cell
phone use on a commercial aircraft will interfere with the captive customer
base and may limit airline profits. Private airplanes have not reported any
instances in interference with navigational instruments.

So true. I shudder to imagine the cost per byte in-flight wireless access
will be, if indeed the airlines start to provide it.

As a side note, if they do offer wireless access then "flight mode" will be
useless as it is intended.

In case anyone is interested in reading the actual policy:

http://www.house.gov/transportatio [...] enzel.html

"We must ask that you never use the following nonapproved equipment
during flight: cellular phones, two-way pagers, radios (AM/FM or VHF),
TV sets, remote-controlled games or toys, a cordless computer mouse, and
commercial television cameras. These devices may interfere with the
aircraft's communications and navigation systems."

[...]

"It is a federal offense to use cellular phones in flight. The phones
may trigger a warning in the cockpit, causing a potential inconvenience
to all passengers. The telephones installed on our aircraft are shielded
to prevent interference with aircraft systems, and therefore are safe to
use at any time."

I believe the policy has been updated at least once since 07/2000,
though I don't a new version handy. (For example, cell phones may now be
used while the plane is on the ground even if the aircraft doors are closed)

And the FCC is now soliciting comment on abolishing the ban entirely.

hmm that's strange, on my 4150 and 4350 enabling flight mode turns
everything off.

I think one can customize flight mode under Settings->Power->Wireless

I only have a phone, no network card, but it looks like if I had a network
card it would be in the list and I could change which devices where affected
by "flight mode".

Again, not sure. It just might explain the difference here.
