Hi All

Is anyone aware of any specific connectivity issues associated with
installing XP SP2? I ask because, since doing so, I can't get my PC to talk
to my Sony MiniDV camcorder or my iPAQ, both of which use USB (actually,
come to think of it, the camera is on FireWire, but anyway...). With
Christmas approaching, this is a bit of a bummer, as I won't be able to take
stills picture!

Thanks,

D

There are no issues, but you may have to upgrade/install your USB
driver if your machine has USB2. Check under Control Panel -> System,
Hardware tab, Device Manager button for any devices with a yellow
"warning" icon beside them. Also, try going under the USB section and
look for the USB host controller(s), go into their properties and then
go to the Driver tab and click "Update driver" and allow it to try and
find an updated driver.

Thanks for replying Rob, but I've tried all that. I've also tried
uninstalling and reinstalling all USB drivers, and still nothing. Now I've
taken the radical step of uninstalling SP2, and still nothing. I'm getting
really frustrated, because I've not once been able to get my iPAQ working
with my PC, and it wasn't cheap. It's practically useless without any
sync'ing. Well, actually, make that completely useless.

I'm not a super-expert PC user, but I know my DLL's from my IRQ's, and this
is just crazy. Nothing works, and I honestly don't know what to do.

Please, anyone, anywhere, any clues?

I really don't want to have to rebuild my entire PC. I'm not even confident
that would work.

You may want to ask your question in the microsoft.public.windowsxp
newsgroups as well - it seems as though you may have problems with
WinXP and USB.

Can you connect your iPAQ to another computer to see if it sees the
iPAQ? This would eliminate the iPAQ being the problem...

I should probably have mentioned that I have been running my iPAQ with
another machine to which I no longer have access. It worked fine then, but
has never worked with my home machine. The only thing I can think of is
that I have Outlook differently configured at home, with no e-mail account.
All I use it for is stand alone contacts and calendar.

Is there anything in Outlook I should be aware of that I'm not? Does
Outlook have to include at least one e-mail account?

Thank you so much for taking the time to speak to me.

If you don't hear any tones when connecting it to the system at all,
then there's a problem at the USB level - you should hear a two-toned
sound when connecting a peripheral (USB, Firewire, PC Card, etc.)...
if you're not hearing this sound, then Windows is not seeing the
device.

ActiveSync is your main program to communicate - Outlook is just used
to grab the info from.

It does make the USB 'bing bong' sound, but doesn't make the higher pitched
'diggerdeedink' sound that I'm also used to hearing from the PDA and then
the PC (the ActiveSync sound). The PDA screen then very briefly says
'Connecting to Host', then 'User Authenticated'. The green ActiveSync icon
lights up and spins, and when I open ActiveSync, the screen says
'Connecting...' and just hangs indefinitely. It's sooooo frustrating,
because it doesn't give me any information anywhere about the problem. It
just tells me everything is OK, but nothing happens.

I have also ensured that the connection settings on my PDA allow USB (Start
> ActiveSync > Tools > Options > Options > Enable PC sync using this
connection (USB, checkbox).

I think I may be going mad.

Since you've mentioned SP2...have you tryed disabling windows firewall ?
there are two applications that you need to add to the firewall exception
list in order to get active sync to connect through the sp2 firewall. try
disabling the firewall first then see if you can connect; controll panel >
windows firewall > check the "OFF" button. The "bing bong" noise on a usb
connection suggests the desktop does "see" the usb device.

Go along with what Ted said. In addition, are you using any other
firewall programs?
