How ever you arent getting it, sony went in conglomeration with IBM to create the cell, so they own part of that cell, and they dont have to buy the rights off of them, they can manufacture it in their own factories, they dont have to pay amd or intel to manufacture it for them, which obviously isnt just going to be manufacturing costs. You must understand how they get that terraflops calculation. They get the peak performance of one spe, then multiply that by the ammount of spes and then add the floating point performance of the ppe core. How ever that is a horrendously flawed calculation.

No, actually, it was because Intel turned the offer down because they sold their processors for the original Xbox at a loss, and was not willing to do so again. They were actually hoping AMD would take up the offer so they would incur the expense instead.

Not to add more fuel to fire already going, but I just want to get something cleared up by anyone that actually knows more about it then me. My beliefs were that both the Xenon and Cell processors is IBM's custom PowerPC based core from IBM. The difference being that Sony and IBM work together, while MS just bought the rights to make it themselves to bring down cost. Kinda of hoping JJ will know. He's always had a an open mind from what I've read from his post in other forums. And AM your are very correct about cost, dev a CPU isn't cheap at all. It's the most $$ part of dev. Don't know why you guys are still going on with the war tho. Both sides have brought up good points.

Again looks up the development history of the xbox and the xbox 360. MS couldn't do die shrinks on the P3's they were getting from Intel so the cost was fix. Sony on the other hand started off with huge chips and was able to scale back the costs with further process shrinks.

No they didn't! It started off with Sony and Toshiba, they laid the ground work and then got IBM in to do the PPE and they made some other changes like making the SPEs simpler and having more of them and other various changes. Originally IBM said to have just all PPEs similar to xenon.
