i just installed a new motherboard on my broken emachine. all went well until after i installed windows xp.

i turned the computer off because i had something else to do.

later when i tried turning on the computer, nothing shows up on the monitor. i know the omintor works because i tested it with another computer. the drives pop open when i eject them and everything so i figure that the power is working. i tried putting in a video card, ejecting the battery, clearing the CMOS and i still get the same results.

what's wrong?

Try a different video card and see if you can get it to post BIOS. I recently had somewhat of the same problem where it would go to post on and off. I had 2 evga 7800's. I flashed ones bios to KO speeds and the other was stock. The stock speed card wouldn't run on my DFI board at default settings, but the overclocked KO speed card runs beautifully.
It was pretty funny to discover that my modded card worked rather than the factory installed bios card. Both cards are the exact same model and make.

Ohh, before i forget. How do you know it was the mainboard that was broken? Maybe it was the video card that is going out. It's worth testing by trying a different card anyway.

More info on what motherboard, power supply, and video cards you are running too, please.

well, it was using onboard video at first. then it didn't work so i borrowed my friends video card and it still doesn't work.

Does your mainboard need to short a jumper to disable the onboard video? If you can give me the model number I can look it up most likely or you can check the book that can with it.

the motherboard you linked too doesn't support the processor you have listed. your processer is either 754 or 939.
please list all your parts.
also did you replace this mb because the other one died or for some other reason

i have an old emachine C2480.

specs:
amd athlon xp 2400+
samsung 512mb RAM
western digital 80GB hard drive
and motherboard listed

i replaced the motherboard because of the same problem i have now. i just bought that mobo and it's too late to RMA it so i'm hoping there's another way to revive this computer.

Ok, I am a bit confused. The motherboard is a socket 462 (socket A), but you have a AMD 64 3800 (939) in your sig. I take it we're not talking about the same system.
I didn't see any video jumper settings in the guide for your mb. So, aside from making sure your cables are tight we can rule out video card. Looks like you may be RMA'ing your board. It's a cheaper brand and may just be faulty. Since it won't post there's not much else I can suggest. Usually if a motherboard part fails under load happens shortly after you install it. I don't know if I'd waste much more time on that board.

yeah it's another system.

gahhh...too late to RMA, i just wasted $40!

Did you try a different power supply? Same problem on both boards sounds worth a try if your stuck with it.

no i didn't try another psu but note that it worked earlier, then all of a sudden this happened.

Cons: None that i can think of. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones not to have a dead board on arrival based on other reviews of this board.... More ยป

Not exactly glowing reviews!

true. but mines wasn't dead on arrival. it worked for a while, then failed. i dunno how this problem happened.

You could try swapping out the RAM, depends on your config, if you got 2 sticks try each one seperatly or you can borrow a buddies that you know is working. The PSU could be it although a less of a possibility. We ruled out the video card most likely. You could do a complete tear down and see if you can get a post with just the video card(onboard otherwise) and trying the ram suggestion I mentioned. Could be you're the winner of another great dead board from that chip maker. That's about all I can think of.

meh....i'll see what i can do. i don't have the computer by me so i won't be able to mess around with it till the next few days. thanks a lot for your input though.

No problem, reminds me of my days past struggling with ECS boards. The price was great although I would spends countless p/o hours of troubleshooting. Thank god for Fry's electronics return policy. They've seen a many crappy boards back from me. Good luck.
