I would buy a name brand if I were you.

Wonderful computer, great price......you better be willing risk it on ebay though. I wouldn't buy electronics off ebay (for the fear there would be something wrong with them), but it is your choice.

Not a great quality machine, Acer, in my experience.

I wouldn't trust that much 'shipping from Taiwan'

I have no experience with the brand but it is a big brand with nice components.

Recently, I was shopping for a laptop and I tried through a lot of different brands. Here are my conclusions:
-Acer: cheap, but very bad design + marterial used, Looks really cheapo.
-HP: Average price, average design, built quality issue ( some laptops have parts showing out of alightment)
-Toshiba: I tried a Qosmio line and though it was impressive, the marterial and built quality were only a bit better than HP.

I finally settle with a Fujitsu Lifebook:

And upgrade the memory to this:

And got lucky on ebay:

Now my laptop is humming along with the T2600 + 2g of ram. All that for about $2000 and I still have the extra 512mb DDR2 SO DIMM and the T2300 to play with.

Also, I have to say that Fujitsu is the best laptop for me, so far. Its built quality is exceptional, very ruggy and doesn't feel like it is going to break apart like the other brands. The screen is also the best:

The guy in that review made a mistake saying that Fujitsu has a bad design on the ventilation. Actually, I think they have the best, IMO. They don't use any vent on the bottom of the laptop, instead they use a vent on the side to suck in cold air and blow hot air out to the back. The Qosmio I tried, use vents on the bottom ( so is HP and Acer) and the bottom of the laptop get so hot when in use, you don't want to call it a laptop anymore, it will burn you.

Search the forum, there's another article very similar to this from not long ago.

I rate laptops like this:

Excellent - Sony, Apple
Good - Compaq of old, Toshiba
Reasonable - Dell, HP
Questionable - Acer

I posted pretty much the same thing in the last one.

I would switch hp and compaq on that list. Also, sony is expensive and not very good...I would put it as unreasonable. Also, I don't think you can rate apple on that list because there is no other maker that has the Mac OS on it...so it isn't comparable.

Its seems evry company has pro's and con's, my last laptop was a fujitsu seimens, which i liked, but i'm looking for a 15" (or smaller) with a good graphics card.
