Best Laptop CPU?

Anything core duo would work. Unless your into 64 bit programs. Intel simply put, has the best mobile platform out there at this time.

I'll get flamed for this i'm sure but, Dell has probably the best deals on laptops. They just dropped their prices on all of their laptops. They have core duo machines for very good prices. I would check them out.

Cool, I have a 9300 widescreen with the Pentium M 730 and it's performance is incredible. I just ordered a core duo machine for the other half with the extended battery. Can't wait to see how it performs.

Thanks to CompUSA, I got an Acer Travelmate 4202 for $950. Centrino Duo, 1GB DDR2667, 100GB HD and they threw in Bluetooth for free. I get about 3 hours on one battery. This thing multitasks super good and is surprisingly fast. I've tried to shut it down by doing a bunch of simultaneous copies (memory stick to HD, HD to USB HD, HD to iPod) while burning a CD, listening to iTunes and surfing. Couldn't kill the beast!

They're very good for that, you know. Much better than HP's. That's because Dell writes their own graphis drivers which are "XXX10 optimized" and "next-gen porno" ready.

I couldn't quickly locate a 1405, so I quit trying. But I did find a 1505 and since that's more comparable to my Acer, I configured it. I added the 9-cell battery you mention above and the 3 year warranty plus the software bundled with my Acer and came up at $1602 after the current $300 discount. Even if you knock off the $80 to get down to a standard battery, that's $300 more than I paid ($950 + $250 for 3 yr.) Dell isn't always the best deal you can get. Dude.

i wasn't talking about that one. the 1405 is cheaper. that one i mentioned has the most i have seen claimed with one battery. come on... 8 1/2 hours, that is very good. and i think believe it's around 5 pounds only. and trust me, if you look for online coupons, you'd be surprised how much more you could knock off. you can find usually around 500 dollar knock offs instantly if you spend a certain amount which brings it down to usually a grand. or the bigger savings for spending more. you can even add in a lot of upgrades with that too, it's like your adding upgrades to bring it back down to around a grand, it's crazy. and i never said it was always the best deal, but you got to admit that most times it is. and that 1505 has other upgrades the acer can't touch.

as i said, it might be what he's looking for. as for me, those new intel macs are looking pretty cool... (laptop just broke recently, such a bummer...)

Don't make the big mistake in buying Intel's current 32-bit shitty processors. You're gonna regret it. 64 bit is here to stay. If you aren't in a hurry you can wait for the Turion X2 (which will be dual core) or wait for Merom (Intel's 64-bit offering of the core duo). Once Turion runs on native 64-bit OS and apps, there's no P-M on the world that could beat it (you can google the benchmarks yourself).

yeah, i agree with you on that. we'll have to wait to see what happens though. i wouldn't exactly call them shitty. and 64 bit isn't exactly here yet, and i'm sure it doesn't just happen overnight.

Well, that's the catch. I went to the CompUSA store and negotiated the fast flex upgrades I wanted - and got a discount off the laptop, got the upgrades for free and got another $50 knocked off the service plan. It was very fast and the sales guy was VERY flexible.

Your price is escalating quickly. I got a better deal, period.

Good for you. Our work group bought over 20 desktops and Dell turned their back on us. The boxes sucked. I swore I'd never deal with them again. Time passed and although I didn't forget, the pain subsided. So I got Dell laptops for the kids. Then I was reminded of their lousy SC so hopefully this time, I'll not forget. You can have them!

idk, i just checked the coupon, it works on the dual... with that in play it evens out? very flexible? interesting, i didn't realize they swap out parts, learn something new everyday huh? yeah, price usually goes up with parts such as i listed... i kind of feel your pain on the dell thing, i'm a bit skeptical about my dead paperweight laptop right now... but i believe it only affected one model and they have lawsuits on that. too bad i had to pick that model... but i might consider writing them flaming emails, maybe they will replace for free, which they should anyways. as far as the other three dells i have seen, all worked fine. and if it needed replacements, it wasn't a bad experience for me. what exactly went wrong with those computer if you don't mind me asking?

A MacBookPro running XP can defy the new Apple ads saying that Macs don't get viruses, don't freeze, etc. Now you can PCify your Mac! Apple should sell OSX that would work on a regular PC.

I dunno. Spec it and price it. As I said before: Centrino Duo, 1GB DDR2, 100Gb HD, DVD/DL/RW, bluetooth transmitter and mouse, 3 year plan deluxe, $1200 out the door - and he threw in Office '03, Taxcut Deluxe, Nero, 50 blanks and some CD cases too. At the time I purchased, there was a good coupon deal with Dell and yet they were over $400 higher.

About half of them had their PS's croak within the first 2 months. All of them had numerous bugs in the OS that we were not seeing in similarly outfitted IMB desktops. Management pushed the Dells because they were something ridiculous like $25 less each. Lost time geting the POS's fixed added up into the tens of thousands of bucks. The Dells were being used as instrument controllers so when they went tits up, we were hosed.

Dell. . . . . But the only other laptop i had was toshiba so can only really speak for deal. I have had good luck with dells refurbed laptops , i recently got 2 but get this. both were 9400/e1705 series 17" screen but 1 had a core duo 1.6ghz 60gig hd 1 gig ram onboard video, $690 shipped. when i got i friday it was all scratched so i sent it back dell in return sent a 1.8 core duo with a true life screen "nice" and 100 gig 7400rpm hd. The second laptop i got was with core duo 1.8, 60gig hd , it has a 7800go video card this was $900 shipped. I have buyer's for both but id like to keep 1 maybe the true life if i can figure out if its possible to install a video card in it. From what i read if it comes factory with a video card you can upgrade but if it has onboard video you cant. Not sure why there seems to be enough space for the heat pipe and card
