"Stop processing more rules" won't be available if "Delete from server" is
selected.
"Delete it" option just moves it to Deleted Items and yes, if "Stop
processsing more rules" isn't also checked, the next rule will be applied.
NEXT??

Oh! You're talking about Local Email, not News. I was only talking about
News rules.
Yes, when applying such a rule to local email account, you'd want to stop
processing after deleting. I don't have any rules for deletion of local
email. Not sure I can imagine why I'd ever use one.

Right. Checking my own "Delete from server" rule, yea, every other
action, including "Stop processing more rules", becomes shaded &
uncheckable (whether or not that's a word). So, it isn't an issue with
that action. STILL, as the site I think says, such a rule should be
moved to the top of all other rules, or it won't be deleted at all.
OK, definitively then (so, next decade, me 'n Terhune won't have to test
it), any action that moves a message from one folder to another,
including "Delete it", must also be checked "Stop processing more
rules", OR it will NOT be moved or deleted at all. OK, thanks. Dundat
was right, then, & he's OK by me. Could be others are after him, though!
Terhune: There is a "Delete it" in NEWS rules too, just not a "Move" or
"Copy" (too bad).

Naw, I get your drift. I'm on a small handful already, and only two with
high traffic. I like to review the threads for keepers before I delete them
manually. Understand, my OE habits include storing up to many thousands of
emails in certain folders, and I have several dozen local folders (I'm the
backup corresponding secretary for a few different people, family/business
clients, in that I download their email (leaving copies on servers) and
store it in case they botch something.)
In short, what little performance hit is brought on by having lots of large
local folders is something I got used to long ago. (Is that a mouthful or
what!?!)

Don't mention Vista to me! I haven't the time and my damned hardware is way
to persnickety. But when I get a moment to breathe, I'm going to install a
decent RAID controller and stop using this garbage Highpoint thingy on my
ABIT AT7 board, since I *think* it's at the root of most of my problems. I'm
also tempted to replace all the RAM with Crucial, since I've had nothing but
problems with the stuff that came with the machine three years ago unless I
throttle the various BUS speed settings. Not only would I like to be able to
install new OS partitions without having to spend days or weeks tweaking
this or that in order to finish the job, I'd like to familiarize myself with
SBS, since I'll be installing a server/network for my brother when I get
back.
I'm hoping to get at least a few days to play with Vista before the Summit.
In fact, my brother is sending me a laptop to rebuild and test some new
database software, and told me to feel free to take it to the Summit. (I
have three laptops, all of them "given" to me. Guess how well they work.)
Might just see if Vista will install to it before I leave.
Before the month is out, I also have dozens of hours of data entry and
database manipulation to finish for a client (this one's my uncle) using
ExpensAble, not to mention yard work, now that it's cooled off a bit here.
Think I can get it all done, <g>?

I'm not bothering with it until Beta 2, at the earliest. IE7b1 is bad
enough.

Same here but my concerns about the appearance of my yard pale in comparison
to what those along the Gulf Coast are going through right now. (Here in
farm country, my "suburban" neighbors mow once a week. I haven't mowed in
over 2 weeks. Guess what? Two days after they mow, you can't tell the
difference, except mine is greener and weed-free.)

I'm trying hard not to allow my naturally depressive tendencies and
well-developed empathy from totally paralyzing me with regard to the Gulf
states. I'm only having so-so success, but I can't bring myself to turn off
CNN and watch (or rather, listen to) anything else.
I'm seriously considering going back to my lava puka on the Puna coast of
Hawaii, the one that's filled with two feet of ironwood pine needles and
makes a great bed, away from TV, telephones and even computers. Leave
everything behind and go back to living out of a duffel bag. A few good
friends and the only remaining nude beach in Hawaii make excellent and
stress-free neighbors.

Sure, why not, once the levees are repaired? It's not like the pumping is
going to significantly affect the so-called lake's level that much. As soon
as the levees are repaired, they "lake" will naturally fill to drain level
pretty quick anyway.

Saw that, too. Or rather, I listened to it. I have the TV over my left
shoulder and have to turn to actually watch. The anecdotes are just too
distressing today, I'm able to pay better attention to the talking heads.

Huge difference in circumstances. In New Orleans, the store proprieters are
all gone. There is almost *no* infrastructure left that's worthy of the
name. Not necessarily so in other places.

Hopefully this catastrophe will inspire Americans to start asking some
serious questions about why this was allowed to happen. A good starting
point is to get a little history on how your federal government diverted
funds from fixing the levees in New Orleans that could have prevented so
much damage to people's lives. Here's the story ...

Please, if you believe anything would have stopped a level 5 hurricane of
this size from doing what it did to New Orleans (a city that is below sea
level) then perhaps you'd be interested in buying a nice bridge. That's
right, it George Bush's fault, we should've known.

Money would also have been better spent on evacuating those poor families,
prior to the hurricane strike, that didn't have the financial means to get
out of the area, and hence perished.

Well, besides the fact that the levee system is in great part why New
Orleans is below sea level (petroleum extraction apparently plays a part,
also), it is an even more important player in the erosion of the Mississippi
River Delta. Hard to say if a healthy delta would have blocked out enough of
the strength of the storm to protect NO, but it's clearly demonstrable that
the location of New Orleans goes strongly against nature. No one is likely
to advocate the abandonment of the city successfully, but it was, in fact, a
disaster waiting to happen. Yes, it would have been a disaster in any case,
but it was greatly exacerbated by the geological situation, which situation
*was* in great part, man made.

I vacationed in N'Orleans/Slidell and Biloxi a long time ago.
{Ironically, in an area built over hundreds upon hundreds of pipelines,
I found myself on the 26-mile long Lake Pontchartrain bridge,
in a Chevy Suburban, hauling a 35-foot long travel trailer,
almost out of gas. That's the same bridge that is now missing
all those sections}.
Loved the food and the area, and thought briefly about relocating,
but demurred after reading an article which spelled out EXACTLY
what was going to happen to N'Orleans one day.
And it just did happen. EXACTLY.
With one exception. I heard of one computer simulation
that postulated a death count of over 100,000 people.
{Amazingly, Wolf Blitzer on CNN never even blinked.
In fact, he totally ignored the guy. or, more likely,
he wasn't even listeningto what he had to say}.
As outrageous and inconceivable as it may seem
to even suggest, they should NOT rebuild.
N'Orleans shouldn't be where it is.
If they rebuild, and they probably will, it will happen again.
They can rebuild the levees to withstand Force 5,
and they'll get hit with a Force 6.
Lakes can be dammed, but, unfortunately,
numbering systems can be damned.
Nature will have its way.

I agree with your sentiments, Hugh. In fact, I have to think that if New
Orleans wasn't such a valuable port, the idea would be more seriously
considered. Still, NO isn't the only place that was destroyed. The nature of
its destruction is rather unique, but the biggest difference between it and
other locales in the area are its size and complexity, not its geography,
nor the impact of the storm on structures. In fact, in terms of destruction
(leaving aside the secondary flooding NO experienced), NO fared quite a bit
better than the Mississippi coast. That's the case for *this* storm, of
course.
If the Army Corp of Engineers hadn't "tamed" the Mississippi, it would long
ago have rerouted itself into an entirely different drainage system to the
west of its current path, the Atchafalaya, and NO would have no reason to
exist in its primary role as a major port. Of course, other cities would
have built up, probably with the same problems. Even discounting the lack of
replacement delta soil caused by the levees, much of that area is apparently
subsiding due to petroleum extraction (in addition to compaction), so unless
the city starts well above sea level, it's eventually doomed.

Kelly lived there? I hope she is one of the million that were evacuated
or the 25,000 left in the Superdome. What a catastrophe, whether it is
poor location at fault or no! But the looting afterwards gives the thing
a bit of a stink! Can't they just wait for the aid/billions on it's way?

Nah. They aren't taking just food & toilet bowls. Anyhow, there are
helicopters & busses ready to take them to safety, to the Astrodome.
It's a sin what is happening there! Instead of helping in the rescue

The conditions can only explain part of peoples actions.
There is no excuse for the looting of luxury items as well as the shooting
and other truly criminal activities.
Some may make excuses for their actions, but they are nothing more than
excuses.

As usual you show your own character by hoping bad comes to others.
Not at all out of character for you.
I would not commit those crimes.
Apparently you would since you seem to think it is justified in the
situation.
As usual you display a low standard.
Or perhaps you did not read my post before commenting, also normal for you.

It's all Bush's fault...he didn't make the dikes strong enough, he
didn't make them all evacuate, he didn't check to see if the Astrodome
roof was strong enough, he didn't make them practice evacuations,
he didn't make them stock up on food and water, he didn't...oh well,

Not all of it. There is no need to loot TVs, but I haven't seen many
shots of that. Dry clothes, after walking for hours the a flooded
cesspool. Bottled water, after going days without. Yeah, Some of the
looting is definitely necessary.

No, I understand that life is more precious than than property. And
looting a store, that will be demolished after the when the flood waters
receed, for food, water, and dry clothes is no crime in my estimation.

I did. And I really do hope that you find yourself poor, and left
behind, surrounded by a cesspool, with no clean water or food or dry
clothing, watching your family starve and dehydrate, watching people die
around you.
Why do I hope that? Because that would be the only way for you to

You need to make a long leap or another of your assumptions to think I do
not "understand and empathize with what these people are going through."
Read my post again.
I said nothing about necessities, what I did say "luxury items as well as
the shooting..."
That is not food or water.
I would NEVER steal the luxuries or commit senseless crimes if I was in that
position or worse.
The "truly criminal activities" refers to senseless criminal activity of
stealing luxuries, assault etc, those totally unnecessary for health and
safety.
But again you assumed as you need to twist something to suit your own
agenda.
Or perhaps you deny any luxuries are stolen.
I deliberately did not refer to the essentials in my post because I can
understand their position.
But I doubt I would steal those if I were in their position, there are other
options, such as getting a message to property owner, keeping a record of
what was taken from where etc.
There were qualifications in my post, read it again for the first time, this
time make an effort to understand.
You hope "watching your family starve", you are now hoping bad for my
family.
Simply because you disagree with me, you now hope tragedy befall many
others.
You have gone even lower than I thought possible.
Good bye Kurt.
I would NEVER return the "favour" of wishing that or even far less on you,
your family or anyone else for that matter.

I did.

And you accused me of excusing looting luxury items. And I never did.
Quote me, if you can.

Or dry clothes. But most of the looting I saw was not luxury items.
And I suspect that only a very small number of people are going after
"luxury items." Most people are just trying to survive, after being
left behind.

I didn't suggest you would. And neither is the majority of people left
behind in New Orleans to fend for themselves.

Are you trying to suggest that the majority of people are looting luxury

And you assumed that I was excusing the looting of luxury items, which I

I'm sure some were. But not by the majority of people just trying to
survive. I didn't see many TVs at the convention center. I did see
dead bodies there.
You seem to be blaming all the victims of Katrina for the actions of a
very few.

Why should you? I understand and empathize with human suffering. I

While it is a terrible tragedy, everyone knew that a big hurricane
would breach the levees and flood the "Easy" someday. The folks
living there took a gamble living below sea level...and lost.
You're probably right that stronger levees whould have held, since the
hurricane did not hit NO directly. But what would the cost of
strengthening them have been? At what point do we stop bailing out
people who choose to live in a dangerous spot?
I expect the city will be rebuilt, and at least the French Quarter was
mostly spared any damage. Perhaps the lowest lying areas should be
reserved for parkland.

Yeah, yeah, ok. Rich guys living on the Jersey Shore get flood
insurance. I bet the poor folks in NO didn't get any.

Kelly lives in Terrebonne Parish (exactly where in Terrebonne, I don't
know.) It's west of NO.

Looks to me like the main reason we haven't heard from her is the lack of
electricity. We'll just have to wait for her to poke her head out and wave

I'm thinking some people in the IT community needs to get together and
coordinate these various contact lists. I have a sneaking suspicion that
they are going to bloom everywhere and they really should be synched.
Frustrating enough to try and find loved ones in this situation without
adding the extra burden of finding out how many Contact Lists are out there
and how to get to them.

Yeah, it's slightly south, too. But the "west" component is the important
part in reference to the storm track. Instead of winds directly off the
Gulf, they got winds that had been passing over land for some time. Dampened
the impact substantially.

It will all be written off as storm damage. Most of the food would have
just rotten anyway. Better looting food and water than having an even
higher death toll.
