Everyone is going Ga Ga over Conroe months before it's released and I have yet to see a single quality Linux or BSD benchmark.

What the problem is??????? ( to quote a famous person ).

I have yet to see a quality fully independent 3rd party benchmark as well.

Again, what the problem is??????? ( to quote a famous person ).

What's the dealio yo?

while that's true, all the limelight follows current XP and Vista apps. It will work, that's almost certain.

What is disturbing is the lack of good solid fully independent 3rd party benchmarks for any OS on production / commodity hardware.

How long before this beast is supposedly released?

PS VISTA got delayed again.

Does it run Linux?

You know, if Linux had the compatability of XP/Vista, I would only use linux, the damn thing is just too rock solid. I have to admit though, XP ain't bad for stability. Definitely an improvement over 95/98/2000/ME. The only reason I use XP vs. Linux is because you can't do anything on Linux, Microsoft has all the developers wrapped around their finger  .

Linux and BSD can do virtually everything windows can do except play certain windoze only games.

Many games and apps will run under WINE, Cedega, VMWare, QEMU, DOSBox, and others. VMWare and QEMU will run everything windows can run natively except they are not ideal for games.

Mileage does vary but certain games and apps run, some run quite well.

Many apps that do not run, do not need to run because they have excellent open source equivalents.

Microsoft needs to put some overly-extensive effort into their OS'. They are the perfect example of a monopoly, they have no competition so they don't have to put out a better-than-mediocre product.

Linux and BSD are not just for experienced users any more.

People or all ages and skill levels are capable of using Linux.

Kids can use it, adults can use it and seniors can use it, I've supported several people that run it. They just need to be shown what to click on that's all.

It varies, you usually get 70 - 95% of full hardware performance.

Sometimes you gain that back by using x86_64 and AMD64 CPUs which are 25-75% faster in 64bit more.
