I am not getting pictures or text on web sites - example: I go to the IRS
web site to download a form and all I get is a blank page with the small box
in the upper left hand corner with the colored shapes.

How can I fix this problem - it also happens on some of my e-mail

Afaik, all IRS forms are in *.pdf format. Do you have the Adobe Acrobat reader installed?

If just "some", then their probably isn't anything wrong on your end. It's the sender.

*If* it's PDFs that are causing the problem, the thing to do it
right-click the link (instead of clicking on it directly) and "Save
Target As" to download the PDF file, then open it. Acrobat Reader is
notoriously flaky when used as an IE plug-in.

Good point. I think I went through one whole version (4?) of "Reader"
doing it that way. I never really understood why people like to put
out (blurry) *pdf files as opposed to html. I guess it's because they're
more "printer friendly"..

If PDF files are "blurry" they were poorly done and/or "optimized" for
web viewing. What they're best for is faithful rendering of mixed
content--vector, raster and fonts can all be decently rendered, the
pieces packed into the file, plus annotation, etc., all in a universally
readable format that will produce a faithful likeness whether on screen
or in print. Quite decent for documents, and for providing proofs of
graphic art to clients (which is what I mostly use it for.)

What they *aren't* good for is web browser rendering.

Have patience with me - after initially trying to open my saved file with
Microsoft Word, I cannot get it to open with Adobe Acrobat - it keeps trying
to open with "Word"?? How can I correct this?

Left-click on a PDF file once to highlight it.
You must do this or you will get the wrong menu.

Hold down the shift key and right-click the PDF file.
Select "Open With..."

Make sure the "always open" box is checked.

Double click AcroRd32 in the List Box

This is a topic separate from your not seeing PDF material
on the Internet.

This topic's theory is presented in / Start / Help / "File Associating . .
.."
In practice, you need to have Explorer set to show filetypes
(do / Start / Help / "Extensions . . . Hiding, Showing" )

Default MS Word Documents have filetype DOC
Default Acrobat files have filetype PDF
Default Excel files have filetype XLS and so on.

It saves time to be sure each filetype is ASSOCIATED
with the application usually used to read or write it.

Reinstall Adobe Acrobat Reader. That, alone, would probably do it.

Otherwise, if you're certain that AcroReader is already installed, hold
down the <Shift> key while right-clicking the PDF file, then choose
"Open With". Wait for the list to pop up, then check the "Always Use..."
option at the bottom of the list, choose Adobe Reader and click OK.

With Acrobat Reader, I suggest you reinstall it over itself, rather than using the
right-click/Shift method described in other replies. I have seen Acrobat Reader's
associations get too messed up once they are changed like this, and a reinstall of
Acrobat Reader is the only way to get them all corrected.

Yeah, I nmostly only view them through the reader plugin, (or the reader
(which is the same thing)) but on rare occasions I print them they are
*usually* formatted nicely. (and non-blurry ;)

What do you use to publish your own? Acrobat?
