It wasn't my modem, I took it from my parents cause I thought it was hilarious. I am actually the same age as you.
who here still has any hardware that is older than commodore 64? I still have one of those as well as a VIC 20 (I think I must have been about 4 years old when I used to play on those machines). I think there may even be an old style tape drive in my garage somewhere, and when I say old style, I mean the kind that used audio tapes to record data as noise

Ah I thought u were saying you were 40 or something. Anyway, I have owned every type of computer since the 8088s. Started selling computers when I was 8. Sold my first computer, which was a 486 with windows 3.1 on it. It has 16mb of ram and a sound blaster 16 card. The week after I sold it, (to a friends dad), it got the first peice of spyware that i remember. It turned all the title bars into Porn advertising... NO JOKE. It wasnt that funny then, but sure funny now. I sold it for enough money to buy a brand new pentium 100 computer with a 800mb hdd. And sold that one for enough money to buy a newer computer.
So that 486 has payed for my current computer
.
Note: oldest hardware I still have would be the old 320kb floppy drives, MS-DOS/ PC-DOS, and I thnk I still have a z80 chip somewhere. All from the same era as the c64.
BTW: I keep all the old stuff because I am always fixing pplz old computers. They will never upgrade lol.
I remember when we had to install Win 3.11 by floppy. We payed the same for my first computer as I've payed for my Rig.
Half the old computers that I have don't even need to run with the heatsinks they have.
AHAHHA.
Long time ago. but they actualy kept the OS on floppy untill windows 2000/xp. I still have windows 98 disks on floppy. (40 of them I think).
Anyway, the earliest computer I remember using was the 8088 which is earlier then then C64. It had that old cassette drive attached, and a screen as well. I dont remember what OS it was running, but im gessing PC-DOS. (not microsoft, IBM).
If one of those 40 disks were corrupted.... ah mi dios que usted es jodido. Had that happen to me and I think I put either my or my brother's head thru a wall.
Ahh the good old days, thank the gods that they've passed.
We copied every disk to be sure that didnt happen. And you can do data recovery on those, sector by sector, bit by bit if need be.
| Quote : Dear GOD! Im only 22 and my computer storage house (aka garage) is filled with computers much older then yours, you panzies. |
I got ride of alot of my older computers, I got tired of moving them around the country with me...
Unless someone left said disk on the daskboard of their car in the heat of a Carribean summer... 8O
Naw... thats just a flesh wound.
For the next 3 repleis, im only speaking in binary.

I still have my original ATARI game station and games.....
I think I still have an old Tandy Keyboard computer that used a casette tape for storage laying around somewhere.
You must put this all into context. In the US things aren't as expensive as they were and still are in the Islands. The computer was basically something around $5000 when adjusted for US dollars. Floppys at that time to my knowledge were expensive in the US and for what I know were priced at murderous rates in St. Lucia. What we had you conserved.
That and the thing actually melted. It freaking melted. 8O
I'm kinda happy I live in the US just for that.

Computers were about $5000 back then in the united states. I collect National Geographic mags that advertise the old systems.
Actually, I still have the original disks for Dos 6.0 and 6.22 as well as the original floppies for win 3.1. It is funny because when I built my first rig about 3 years ago, for some reason I couldn't install winxp (it would freeze during the install), and the only OS I had on hand was a win98se cd my cousin gave me. Well, little did I know that cd was only the UPGRADE version of win98 so I had to have a prior version of windows on my disk to install it. So, I actually went through and first installed dos 6.0 and then 6.22 and then I installed windows 3.1 on this machine before I could "upgrade" to win98se!
Keep in mind that for less than an hour, I was running win 3.1 on an athlon xp 2600+ @2.083Ghz ! I nearly died of laughter when I saw that HUGE screen and HUGE icons (i don't think win 3.1 supported resolution changes) because the last time I had used windows 3.1 was back when we still had our 486 nearly 10 years prior.
So, before I finally got winxp to install/work I actually backed up the win 3.1 floppies to a CD in case I would ever need to do that again. Of course, now that I have gotten winxp to work, and I am even thinking of migrating to Linux permanently, I have a cd with this really old operating system on it for no apparent reason. I guess in another few years I will try reinstalling win 3.1 just for laughs.

*EDIT* Damn no word wrap in this forum!
edit the damn post the window's too long
Edit:
Thanks
Just for future reference.
You can boot from windows XP upgrade and install XP. It will ask you to insert a previous version of windows and thats it. You didnt need to go though all that.
Likewise, you can copy the cab files from windows98 over to the C drive and install it as a full version, no upgrade needed.
My old p-100 is operational, but I need a new hdd, and more edo ram. I think that supported max is 256 MB, i.e. 4*64. Currently, it has 4*8 MB, LuckyStar MB, i430fx chipset, 3 empty VLB slots and 1 empty PCI, bad WD HDD with 1282 MB capacity, 256KB L2 cache pipelined, SB Creative 16 on VLB, Diamond Stealth graphics with 2 MB ram on PCI and 15" kfc flat screen monitor.
Off the topic, this monitor has a higher refresh rate than my current LG L1915S LCD-TFT.

Your monitor is made by KFC? Mmmmm, fried chicken...
Comptuers only had 1 VLB slot (think AGP). Your thinking of Extended ISA (32bit ISA ).

@Vikris
Ahhhh, I remember ISA. I still have a ISA modem and other devices and cards for it including one that you can put RAM into. Don't know what it does but it looks pretty cool.

F@$% that man. Your reality scares the hell out of me.
But its so happy and fun!
thread post #1132
EDO brings back geeky memories, my first year in college (1997) my rommate and I got each other a pair of 32MB EDO SIMMs from OnSale.com which eventually became Yahoo auctions I think. He had a p200 and I had a cyrix 6x86 p166+ but our dorm room network connection was blazing fast, never been back to anything less than DSL.
Now that I am reminiscing I remember I got a Palm Pilot Pro for high school graduation, I think it had 2MB memory and an 8MHz processor.

(insert diety) I love that qoute! Adam Savage - Myth Busters. My wife has it as her screensaver.
Now I have both a Livedrive and a Tungsten C that both have Wifi and the C has a 500Mhz Intle Xscale processor, more than the 266 my P2 has and the Lifedrive has a 4GB hard drive, which is more than what my Pentium Pro came with.
The Orignal Palm.....
Atleast it ain't a Newton
funny you mention newton, the kid across the hall had one, then he wised up and got a palm!
my rommate also had a TI-92, that was a beast of a calculator but it could do symbolic math.
Anyone else hate differential equations?
If you mean hate it like I hated high school geometry then yes.
No not really. What I hate about them, and any other math question, is when you have to do them for no other reason, other then to get a grade.
I barely remember anything about the few courses of calculus I took in school. Its funny how a couple of years will make you forget almost anything learned in school (could also have been the copious amounts of alcohol). Then again, I have learned way more in my last 2 years of working.
Highschool Geomertry? That as a blast. I ended the year with an A+. I didnt have a perfect 100%, I had a 137%. I did as much extra credit as I could. I even wrote my homework in C++ for extra credit as it showed an advanced uderstanding.
Boy I want to go back to that class and take it again.
Calculus kicked my ass up and down. I'm still in school and I'm so happy that I managed to place above it.
@comptia
I did better in trig than and calc than I did geometry. Still can't figure out why.
ROFL, I havent got that far yet. I couldnt pass Trig. I got an horrible teacher that ended up cancling class, which reduced my hours, which voided my schollarship. I tried taking the class again, but school became too expencive for me and I had to leave. Will return... someday.
I'm with ya brother.........
Physics was my favorite..
exactly what I hated, no point to calc/diff Eq for a CS major with DB/Network focus. On the other hand, the aerodynamics guys on my solar car team loved calc! They litterally drooled over CFD models.
Ya, I was going into astrophyics because everything reguarding physics is very cool. I was going for astrophyiscs and a paleogeophyics double major. College was free for long enough to get most of my Astronomy and geology out of the way. Did a bit of phyiscs, but the math part held me up.
Physics was great, where else can you charge up a layden jar (capacitor) and give the entire class a 100,000+ Volt shock!
Funny physics story, when we were covering momentum and inertia my prof set up a .22 rifle adn shot it into a block of wood suspended on cables like a pendulum, he was soo eager to pull the trigger he didn't check the aim and nearly missed the block, good show!

Ahhh, The good old days... then you have to grow up and become responsible..
LOL.
The best physics lesson I can remember was when the teacher was explaining the properties of Liquid Nitrogen and its effect on electromagnetic waves, and energy dissapation. Towards the end of the lecture, he spilt some on his hand and the class gasped. No damage done, and he did the ol rutine of the ballon / carrot dipped in the stuff, and breaks it over the table. Then he picked up the container (was like a thermos) and poured it over his arm. It was great!

Or a physics teacher.
