HI!,

First time I have posted here.

I have a DELL XPS, P2.4, 1 GB ram, XP PRO.

In the past month, my memory usage has gone way up. I'm now expending a minimum of 30MB to run Explorer, between 2-4% CPU Usage. But if I open two explorer screens it starts taking a toll. I have tried Mozilla and it does the same thing; but probably a minimum of 20 MB

It seems that ALL program are eating at my memory very quickly.

My paging file is set for system managed (1534MB)
I have a 60GB HDD

One of my concerns is that one of the ram slots are dead? I have tried Microsoft's RAM checker and it says its ok. But this is the only thing I can think of.

I have Spy ware doctor - Clean
I have AVG - Clean
I have PEst PAtrol and Spybot - Clean.

Any other Ideas?

Internet Explorer using 20MB of memory is nothing... in fact that's not a whole lot. Mine is using 32MB as we speak and running fine. 1GB is plenty for almost any setup- so I doubt the problem is one of memory. If System Properties says you have 1GB of memory, then you have 1GB of memory- no bad DIMM slots.

You've already ruled out the possiblility of a spyware or virus problem.

So I would venture to suggest a few things. First, go into Add/Remove programs and remove stuff you don't use anymore. Just because you are not using a program does not mean it's loading itself into memory. Next I would try defragging your hard drive. Finally, hit CTRL ALT DEL and click on the peformance tab. In there u will see realtime data on how much physical and page file memory is being used. Report your findings back here if performance has not increased after trying the first couple things. (Note, please reply with the "available" memory under physical memory and the "PF Usage number."

Thanks,

I guess the system does run ok, At first the system starts using about 222MB, then with only a few applications running, the memory usage shoots way up so fast.

I'll try to remove as many programs as I can and I'll see if that helps then I'll post back. Its wierd that this only happened within the last two months. My system has been perfect otherwise, and it would be a real shame to reformat beause of this.

Here is another thing I noticed ... on my old PII 400, I have 10 sessions of internet explorer running, yet I see only one image name. Here on my laptop. I see an image name for each explorer session.

Current standings of PF usage is 277 (before I opend Explorer), PM 1027764,631986,295374( Total, Available, System Cache)
