can not rejoin domain from workstation
Forum Windows 2000/NT : Windows 2000/NT General Discussion - can not rejoin domain from workstation
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsnt.domain (More info?)
Hi there,
I have a problem. I deleted the computer account from
NT4.0 domain and reinstalled it with new name. When I
tried to join domain, I am getting error that domain can
not be connected. All TCP/IP setting working fine..ping is
also ok.
Can anyone tell whats wrong with my setting?
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsnt.domain (More info?)
There has to be more to the error you are referring to
e.g., Domain cannot be found? If so then make sure
the NT machine is pointing towards your name server.
Can you ping by name the PDC of the domain? What
happens if you attempt to map to a share on the PDC?

I already have done this also but no help.
I have not found any KB article on MS regarding this
problem.
I appreciate your help.

You did not mention the exact error you get when attempting to
join the domain. Open a dos prompt immediately after attempting
to join the domain and run nbtstat -c. What do you see in the cache?

I have the same issue and tried the same thing. Nothing is
working. My machine can see the domain. I can also map
share drives on servers that are hooked to the domain, but
I cant login to the domain......?????here is the error
message:
Unable to connect to the domain controller for this
domain. Have your administrator check your computer
account on the domain.
I also checked the nbtstat -c and it has a list of server
names that we use and couple of machien names...what
should i be looking for.....please let me know...thanks..

The client is NT/W2k? The domain environment is
NT?

Okay so you've deleted the account and you
are choosing to create a computer account on the
domain during the join process?? That's when you
receive the error message?

It's not really crazy at all the list you see in server manager
is most likely coming from the computer browser service
not the SAM database. If you click on view and enable
"show domain members only" you will see the list of
computer accounts.

Enable "show domain members only" then delete the account.
Next remove all connections to the domain ie. shares.. Open
a dos prompt and run net use * /delete to delete all mappings.
Now attempt to join the domain if you still have a problem then
something is blocking Netbios either a software firewall or an
incorrect lmhosts file.. nbtstat -c immediately after a connection
attempt is a good way to verify Netbios is correct. You should
have at least the following: computer name 00, 03, 20 and domain
names 1b, 1c all pertaining to the PDC of the domain.

I just removed it from the server manager (from show
domain members only)...and i did the dos command
too....there were no mappings in the list it says...i
restarted........just so you know...iam logging as
admin......thats the only way i can get in the system...i
tried to join...but gives me same error....dos prompt has
domain and our servers listed aswell.....but i cant
connect to domain...
another thing....at startup....a message keeps coming up
that says.....that some service failed.....and it says to
check it in even viewer.....

Aha that last little bit could be the clue.. Which service
is failing? Open the system log of the event viewer and
post the exact event id and description.
