As a journalist, don't you have a responsibility to check the veracity of
your sources, not just repeat anything you have seen somewhere?
When 2 GB SD cards come out, I'm sure they will be very expensive to start
with.

When traveling I use Noise reduction headphones and wish to use them
listening to MP3's on my XDA II. Problem is that the stereo jack on the XDA
is a 2.5mm and my NR headphones are 3.5mm. None of the adapters I have with
it convert down like that. Any thoughts?

It takes 160GB to hold my collection of ripped CDs. That's backed up to
another drive.

Buy a separate adaptor.

Why not go to a shop where they sell electronic parts and simply buy a
2.5mm jack, take up a cutter and a soldering iron and remove the 3.5 mm
jack and replace it with the 2.5 mm jack?
Or, if you can't handle a solderingthing yourself, ask a friend who can?
The schematics are not that difficult, I think anyone with some knowledge
of electronics will be able to help you.

Just because YOU don't want to does not mean others have different needs.
Why can't you just be happy with your choice and let others be happy with
their choices? Let it go, be happy with what you have, be happy for others
that have what they want- your choices are not right for everyone, not right
for most people but are right for you. Let it go, and be happy with what you
have chosen for yourself.

That may be true as to the freeware. I have purchased the Nero Program
many years ago and it was well worth it. I have purchased the new
Roxio Burning Suite of Programs (This software was installed on the HP
laptop when I bought it but was totally useless, so I bought the
upgrade software and now it works like it should) since I use multiple
computers & the iPAQ it has been my experience to not use programs
that have not been known to function fully. I will admit however that
in this thread I was intrigued by the mention of the Dell DJ, I also
purchased that and it will be here on Monday. I did however take every
cd I own and burn them to the external HD and they await the units
arrival. Over 7,000 songs.

That'd be a fine solution if I never intended on using them for anything

OK, second proposition: buy yourself a piece of wire, suitable for
headphones or whatever, about 0.5m is enough already, a 2.5 mm jack (or
"male" ) and a 3.5 mm counterjack (or "female" ) and make your own adapter.

I'm hovering around 4 times that. Some DJs have posted here with larger
collections still.
Make sure you have all the data backed up (media + album art), as you
never know when WMP is going to go postal and rename. retag or delete files.

That's backwards. Need an adapter to par down a 3.5mm plug into a 2.5mm
socket. And it also needs to be a stereo jack. I've gotten a couple of
others that I'm looking into. But if you can find one that cheap I'm all
for saving money!
Cheers

Scratch that, found the one you were talking about. For 99p I'll give it a
shot and see if it works. I'm doubting it since apparently the XDA II
socket is proprietary. Worth the £3.50 to get it shipped.

Your earlier post said 'Problem is that the stereo jack on the XDA is a
2.5mm and my NR headphones are 3.5mm' so I looked for 2.5mm plug to go into
the stereo jack and a socket to fit the 3.5mm plug on the headphones. If you
are there show the guys at the shop what you have and they'll try and match
it- they are usually pretty good in Maplins.

Is that any business of yours, to tell other people how much is enough?? Are
you going to lobby Congress to pass a law banning manufacturers from
creating music players with more than 2 GB?

You just don't get it, do you, nincompoop!!!
Of course nobody said anything of the kind!
However, some people might want to, or at least a large part of their
collection. There are obviously MANY people in the world buying 20, 40, and
60 GB HD music players.
Whether YOU want to put that much music on a player is beside the point.
There obviously are many people who do. You are not the whole world. And a
PDA is a totally different type of device.
Mguru, when do you get that brain transplant?

Wrong, technology is advancing and for mobile music players the technology
is advancing quicker than it is for PPC's/Smartphones which you favor so
furiously. 60GB Today, Double tomorrow. it's always been like that, it
won't change, get over it already. One thing I surely will not acknowledge
is that opinion of yours, and you know where you can stick it don't you?
Any windows mobile device absolutely, undeniably and totally bites the
dust when it is put up to be compared to an iPOD or similarly equipped
mobile music player. That, simply because you *can't* compare the two.
when will you learn the difference! is your head made of granite?
Now buzz off already, you tire me beyond imagination.

not really! of course I agree that we will soon see devices with 1 terabyte
of memory
but this is not the point, the point is that working day has 8 hours and
whole day has 24 hours
and if you compression then 512 MB is enough for 8 hours of music playback
thus ms smartphone with mini-SD card of size 512 MB is enough and since it
is smaller
and has more functions than iPod - here you go! it's superior to iPod!
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.pocketpc,microsoft.public.pocketpc.multimedia,microsoft.public.pocketpc.phone_edition,microsoft.public.smartphone,microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player (More info?)
Yes, really. I don't care if it'll be a terabyte or an exabyte or an
assbite, whatever the hell they come up with will make people drool.
Your working day may be 8 hours, and you might like 48kbps compression
or whatever the hell you use to compress your music with but there are
plenty more people who have their own views, opinions and experiences
and will use that to form their own solution as you and I do daily.
A day is only 24 hours if you stay up for those 24 hours, given.
but the waking day stretches further than a mere 8 hours for me.
I'm on call 24/7 even, if you want to go there. Suppose I want to
have something playing during work, during my ride to work/home and
when I get home, and even when I go to sleep? (Yes, people do that!)
I'll need a whole lot more storage than that needlepoint 512MB.
it won't fit on there I can assure you. and Yet again you miss the
technological point of the whole discussion. You *can not* compare
a dedicated music player to any kind of PPC/Smartphone. the latter
does not have the dedicated processing powers, no dedicated and
specialised equaliser capabilities, nor does it have adequate sound
hardware built in to make it all happen. On a PPC/Smartphone, it's
all software! and not all that great either when compared to the
superior hardware a dedicated player offers.
There goes your superiority! Goodnight.

Apparently you never get out of the office. I routinely travel for three
weeks at a time. I also routinely have other things to do with my time
besides transferring music.
Are you suggesting that I should only take 8 hours of music with me because
you only spend 8 hours in the office? That would be a long trip, heck the
travel time from Ohio to Asia alone is 25 hours.
Or are you suggesting that I have lots of SD cards on hand to switch between
them? That gets kind of expensive doesn't it?
There apparently is no end to this discussion because some of the posters
have a very limited view of the world.

Hell no. check your fact sheets for a change or ask the manufacturers.
Why is it that you fail to see that a SMARTPHONE does not compare software
/and/ hardware wise to a DEDICATED PORTABLE AUDIO PLAYER?
were you born blind and deaf, or are you just here to waste the empty
hours you spend at your desk chewing up your cheaply bought coworker's

maybe not today, but soon.
next year first cellphone with harddisk comes to UK.
soon: also MS Smartphones with harddrives!!
a quote from british press below....
Samsung SPH-V5400
It's a mobile with a what? A mobile with a hard drive - the world's first,
and a precursor to the days when all mobiles will have built-in iPods.
What's the point? Haven't you heard about convergence? Now you don't have to
lug your phone, iPod, digital camera, PDA, radio and TV around. You get it
all in one 125g package.
What's so special? It lets you download and store music, take pictures and
store up to 280,000 low-res images, listen to FM radio, broadcast to nearby
radios and in the future watch TV, plus make the odd call. If you have the
time.
All this in a James Bond-style cigarette case? Not as light as your moby but
at 87.5mm x 54mm x 29.5mm, not that far off. With all that functionality,
battery life might be an issue though.
Wow or ugh? The name SPH-V5400 hardly trips off the tongue. But even though
the hard drive stores little more than a flash memory card, it's a step on
the road to the mobile device of the future. There are bound to be similar
devices around over the next few months. But at least you'll be ahead of the
pack.
When can I get one? Samsung says it's "very likely" to be launched in the UK
next year. Price should be around £500.

"Wow or Ugh", a big UGH. Add yuck! watching movies on such small screens?
What if you drop your phone? bye harddisk! moving parts can not take that
kind of shock treatment, they die. the time that they will be able to
take it is far, far far away beyond your lifespan.
Read carefully where it says 'stores little more than a flash card'
so here you are again preaching your 2GB. And then the battery power.
You are still missing the point, or perhaps you have bad eyes.
Phones do not compare to Dedicated audio players. NEVER.
N.E.V.E.R. will a device that converges multiple devices compare to
each device separately, cramming multiple technologies into one 125g
package is a sure ticket to bad quality and permanent loss of continuity.

NEVER? DAMN it, samsung has just released (now in korea and next year in UK)
a first cellphone with harddisk and we are just getting started in this
area - also SD
cards will be bigger (4GB in sight).
so it will certainly happen that one day the best mobile audio players will

Yes, never.
Long, long before smartphones ever get there, dedicated portable audio
players will have advanced far beyond the audio capabilities of those
silly little phones, and that's a fact you can sync your clock on.
Sure, a hdd is nice. it's fragile, draws a lot of power, but it's nice.
A hdd doesn't increase the quality of audio however. There aren't even
2GB SD cards yet, and now you're already talking about 4GB? I think you
can wait another 5 years after the 2GB cards are released before you
will see those advertised as available, and reasonably priced even.

Sorry, couldn't resist that one.
