local jargon
Forum Windows 95/98/ME : Windows 95/98/Me General Discussion - local jargon
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsme.general (More info?)
I've been here and there in this group and was too focused on solving my
problem to notice some of the "local jargon" that heirloom, Heather, Joan
Archer, et al use. I know what lol is...what the heck is the significance
of the opposing carets and is <g> like gee in gee whiz? If I'm too nosy,
kick my butt and send me home.
PS: I really enjoy the discussions and the information here is invaluable.
Thanks to all and especially Mart who has helped me many times.

Hi Bart......
Welcome to the friendliest ng there is......we have been kidding around for
about 3 or 4 years. <g> is 'grin'........VBG is 'very big grin'......
You made me laugh re 'lol'. I have a cousin in the West Indies who
obviously thinks it means 'lots of love'.....and he blew me away when he
wrote to tell me someone had passed away.....followed by 'lol'. I didn't
have the heart to tell him, (G)
Some others......
OTOH - on the other hand
IMO - in my opinion
HTH - hope this helps
IIRC - if I recall correctly
That should get you started......but there are acronym sites you could
google for. Too lazy to look one up.....
Cheers...Heather (and the rest of them except for Heirloom are all in the
UK...so allegedly fast asleep at this hour)

Would I be wrong by interpreting "lol" with "laugh out loud"? Just a
thought, mind you.

Thank you for the PS, Bart and you're most welcome. As HL said - Welcome to
the 'Looney Bin'.
If you want to see a somewhat fuller (and riper) list of acronyms, try this
site :-
http://www.acronymdictionary.co.uk/
BTW - You ought to think about 'munging' your email address in these
newsgroups - spam harvesters tend to trawl. Look how others have set-up
theirs. Easily fixed in OE |Tools \ Accounts \ News tab \ Properties - and
just amend your e-mail address accordingly.

Glad you like the chat in here Bart, of course plus the help the experts
give.
I see that you have had answers to your question and as others have said
welcome to the looney bin <g> it's one of the reasons I stay here even
though I run XP the place is so friendly and you don't get jumped on for
going OT (off topic) which we very often do.
Enjoy the ride <g>

Thanks, Mart for the heads-up on the 'munging'. I think I have changed it
as needed. No sense in giving the<b's> any toe hold on sending spam.

I know most of the acronyms out there, no too hard to decipher if you let
your mind roam free. I guess it was the opposing carets that tripped my
trigger. Thanks for all the friendly replies!!

Hi Bart! :-)
I don't get here as often as I used to since I also now have W2K and XP, and
have been busy helping in some of the other newsgroups, but, I have to come
back and pop in now and then to visit my good friends here, and see what the
dust bunnies are up to. Plus, as I still have and use WinME, I come here
now and then to beg redemption for my poor system, or maybe the klutz behind
the keyboard with a slight case of hiccups between the ears. <g> 'Tis a
great group here, and the best experts there are for what ails ya. And, if
you're having one of 'those daze', a visit here will put things right
spit-spot. Guaranteed! ;o)

"spit-spot?"......now there's a new one on me. 'Tis obvious, by the

Now Mart....where is your "Support your local Nanny spirit?!?"
However.....I am not sure why they would play it at Christmas time..?? Is
it looked upon as a Christmas movie in the UK? Now me....I like the "Home
Alone..." movie series. I could watch them for eons and never tire. Just
like the 3 Stooges....real classics those.....they never grow stale!
You know the one that I can not abide any longer in the States, that we have
as the ultimate "classic" Christmas, down your throat movie, on just about
every channel at some point, starting on Thanksgiving Day, and running
through New Years Eve, thank you,......"It's a Wonderful Life!" Gah!!! I'll
take MP any day compared to that one.
Ahmmm...can we trade? I'll write our Embassy, you write yours.......world
peace...and all that, you know. ??

Since it would not be appropriate on here, I can't post a very funny joke

Funny, Jan...........y'all should watch a nice little movie called "A

Don't "carets" look like this; "^"?
I thought the "g" was enclosed in opposing "angle brackets". But "<" is
usually taken as a "less than" sign (1<10), while ">" is usually taken as a
"greater than" sign (10>1).

Actually, unless you own the domain, "nospamnet.com", you are wrong. Using
any domain name that you have not registered, or do not have the permission
of the registered owner to use, is wrong. Even if it doesn't exist today,
that only means that it is available to be registered; and somebody
registering that domain will be unpleasantly surprised by the spam awaiting
them because you used it without the authority to do so.
RFC 2606 describes some of the domains reserved for use, which are not to be
registered with the domain registrars:
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2606.html
Two of the ones which seem to be frequently used on NNTP servers are,
".invalid", a Top Level Domain (TLD); and, "example.com", a second level
domain. See the link for other examples. In your case, I would suggest,
"bsmart@nospamnet.invalid"; that would be a great improvement.

We told you it was a 'Looney Bin' <g>
And you can always expect a bonus with HL's tag lines. I've started bottling
them. I'm going to give them as Christmas presents:-
"HL's Bumper Book Of Tag Lines" - Now THAT would surely beat Mary P.

Lol!! Yea! I remember that one! My brother used to watch that, then go
and carefully approach my folks for a BB gun. They always said no. One
year, he spent Christmas with my mom's folks, and being as he was that
grandmother's favorite, he asked her for a BB gun for Christmas. He got it,
of course. But, when it came time for him to come home, my folks said it
had to stay at the grandparents house. He could not bring it home. Talk
about WWIII!!! Eventually, he was allowed to bring it home. All was well
until he shot me in the thigh with it only 6 inches away, and I got a
serious infection from the embedded BB. All gone. He never forgave me.

---I see your point, Norman. I appreciate you letting me know before things
got out of hand and of the URL to research. I am taking your advice and
have changed the domain name. However, out of curiosity, I see domain names
like "nospam.com, nospamatall.com, etc. Do those folks own those domain? I
am anxious to be correct and not make waves.

Some do, probably most don't. Although I use a local Win32 client for most
of my lookup work, here is an excellent web site for such work:
http://www.dnsstuff.com/
Third item down the left column, plug in a domain name. If the domain is
registered, you will find out who is the registered owner. If not, it is an
"unstaked claim", and you need to visit a "claim office" if you wish to
stake your claim. I use GoDaddy for my domain, aosake.net:
http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/default.asp
There are other such "claim offices", or domain registars.

Then, I hope you don't mind if I jump on the wagon as well. Your
suggestion makes munging a lot easier. That is, if this gets through. My
thanks as well.

I'll keep mine with the "SPAM" domain

No...but...those sort usually use all kinds of names on Usenet and other
groups they hand out in. While I normally don' like waving fingers in
peoples directions, I'd say he sorta fit Harry Ohrn's Troll description
quite well. I should point him the direction of alt.corel.....they like
that sort in that group, gives them someone to attack besides themselves,
and the poor slobs that mistakenly drop in seeking help thinking it has
something to do with Corel products. With his demeanor, he'd give them a
run for their money for sure. They're just this side of alt.config. No
holds barred, but, you have to BYODTK. <g>

But do you own it? Do you have the owner's permission? If you can't answer
either question in the affirmative, then you are wrong.
GoDaddy says that "NOSPAMYahoo.*" is available, where the "*" is .us, .biz,
..info, .net, .org, .ws, .name, .tv; as well as .com, which I searched on. It
looks like that domain you are using is not yours to use.
Doubly bad is your username. The whole email address that you have used is
not yours to use; and could very well cause problems for people who do have
the right to use various components of that username. You can't just make up
any old email address that you feel like using.
