Well, that is one of the reasonable explanations for why we are seeing so
few posts recently in the WinME groups.
The migration from Win9X to XP will improve the internet community's
security, .. and the robustness of the individual user's OS. Giving up the
older hardware can be difficult if only for sentimental reasons, though.

Jack,

I think you will find the reduction in posts to the Win Me and other NGs,
including XP, is more due to the introduction of the need to logon to the
web interface to the newsgroups using a passport than that users have
suddenly moved to XP. The day that happened postings from the CDO
interface dropped by 60% or so and have never recovered. The XP
newsgroups have also seen a reduction in postings from the web interface.

If I remember correctly it happened about October last year, because I
made a remark to you when I came back from holiday, thought everyone had

Yes, Mike. I remember you mentioning this previously, but I didn't remember
that the posting dropoff was 60%.
Rather dramatic.
If the number of users needing WinME help hasn't dramatically decreased,
what can we do better to get them to us here? I can't think of anything
easy, ... or cheap.

Microsoft are well aware of the problem Jack and appear to have no
interest in resolving the issue. Instead Microsoft would prefer to see
the end of these nntp newsgroups and would prefer if all support was via
their "communities web sites". The day that happens I depart.

That explains my difficulties with Msn Messenger, blocking access to OE. But
I think to have found a solution, only it involves going into the registry
and that is just a bit scary to me.
Once I've worked up the courage, I'll come back here with my results, in
case anyone should be interested.

Harry.

Harry.....with your luck, I would leave it alone!!! (VBG)

Take it to a tech rather than muck it up.....or just ignore MSN Messenger.
I took it out of here (visually at least).....but can't remember what the
two steps were.

What exactly are you talking about here please? Please don't take offence
but personally I am of the opinion Harry that many of your problems are
self inflicted due to your continued tinkering. I'm sorry to post such a
message but I feel your post and posting history warrant it.

Let me say though that I am not against tinkering. I'm sure we all do it
however my post is prompted by your suggestion that problems you may or
may not be having with Messenger are in some way related to the decision
by Microsoft last October that those posting to there nntp newsgroups
using the communities web interface need now first sign in using Passport.
If you could explain your reasoning here then I would only be too happy to
try and help you but I just can't see the connection.

Regards,

Let's keep it really simple and ask Harry if he has previously registered
with MS Passport?
And if he is going to "tinker" with the registry, does he know how to backup
it and revert, if needed?

(Mike's post about how to run SR from the command prompt goes Here ...)

Plain and simple is what I like, Jack and Mike.
I did register with Microsoft for a passport a long time ago and kept it
active all along.
No "tinkering" in the negative sense here, either.
You were right on, Mike, with your sign-in requirement by Microsoft for
NG's.
And that's the only real (small) problem I have right now, not considering
the thing with the "hidden" GB's, which to me is not a real problem, at
least not right now.
I don't plan to do anything with the registry yet, unless I am absolutely
sure what I am doing and backing up the registry is unfamiliar to me, so
far.
Thank you for bearing with me and not to worry, everything is fine here,
except for this Msn Messenger "nuisance".

Harry.

Heather:

Before I take it to a *Tech*, I'd rather do it myself, because that's
exactly how you learn, but right now I wouldn't dare touch the registry,
don't worry.
Thanks for your concern.

BSE, Noel?

To change the subject (well, not really), I'm sure I gave some sort of
commentary when I was dahn Devon during the Foot and Mouth crisis. It kind
of hit you when you went a mile down the road and you could see three or
four different pyres in otherwise empty fields all around you. I don't
remember though, did it miss Wales? Or was there a baby boom?

Harry, you have two tools to backup the registry: scanreg and system
restore.
Both can be run from Windows and from a DOS boot, if necessary, to revert.
Review the info in Help & Support for more details, and then the MS KB.

Jack:

I don't understand myself, why I can't recall these things when needed, but
it helps 'being stuck with the nose in it'.
Thank you for your patience.

Harry.

When we were in Scotland, Bob told us about the huge pyres of burning
livestock near Dumfries......not to mention that Cumberland was hit hard. I
believe the Dumfries ones were (like many) a safeguard.

And here we are in Canada with one confirmed case of BSE and the Yanks
closed their borders to our beef (2 years ago?). Call it 'competition', not
a danger of infection.

Cheers.....Heather

I'd call it fear of self-improvement.

Jack:

How many things you know go against the stream besides the salmon?
Everything else is floating downstream, including the "stuff" in
your "up the creek" sample, to which I <BTW> don't feel related to. You
don't mind my objection, do you?

Harry, old and sometimes must be like a salmon.
