After reinstalling XP, my DVD player no longer plays sound. CD and system
sounds are fine. (I had this problem when I first installed the DVD, but
re-installing DVD software (PowerDVD) fixed the problem. Now no media player
plays DVD sound.

DVD is a MadDog Multimedia Entertainer 16x DVD-ROM; sound card is integral
on the FIC AU13 otherboard (AMD N-Force2, I think). Sounds like some kind of
driver confusion. Sggestions?

I inadvertantly came across the solution fixing another computer. The DVD
player has to be installed after the sound card, so if you reinstall windows,
you have to uninstall the DVD player and its IDE channel from Device Manager.
Restart. Restart. Reinstall your Media player. Bingo.

This is also how to fix your DVD player if the drivers on a notebook have
gotten messed up by the Interactual DVD playerthat tries to auto install from
most DVD's.

That wasn't the case for me and I had to install the AC3 codec.
