Hi all,

I just put my new Barton 2500+ onto my PCChips M848ALU motherboard and
installed a Cooler Master Jet 7+ full copper hsf.

Hating the noise that this fan makes on full speed, I turned it down
to minimum speed. Now my CPU is idling in the BIOS Hardware Monitor
page at 47-48 degrees Celsius. I have not seen its load temp because I
don't have any benchmarks or ways to read the temp in win98SE.

My question is - Is this okay for idle? Or should I turn the CMaster
up to full speed and put up with the alarmingly loud sound which,
strangely enough, does resemble a Jet?

Basically I figured that I could just run it like this and if it ever
locks up, reboots or shuts itself down I could pump the fan up a
little. However, I am planning to OC it to a 3200+ (easy on my board,
tried it already but it's on stock at the mo) so the lowest fan speed
would prob not suffice for that.

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in
advance!!

Daniel

You would most likely have to put up the voltage to the chip to run it
stable at 11x200mhz and that will create more heat and the need for more
cooling.
There is tons of utilities out there for free to measure the cpu temp.
Just do a google......

Got a question for you....why on earth are you using a PCCHips motherboard?
=)

CPU Stability Test.
Excellent proggie and works in win98se.You can do standard test but also
heating.
In the last case your cpu will be warmed to a maximum, good way to find how
hot it will run under stress.
http://www.benchmarkhq.ru/english.html?/be_cpu.html

Most xp cpu's have trouble hitting 2400mhz without the proper voltage.
You could do some voltmodding, look here :
http://www.ocinside.de/go_e.html?/ [...] inmod.html

At normal cpu clock, your temps could be around 40C idle with standard
cooling.
This is with 2500rpm fan speed,i guess your jet runs at 1400rpm in the
lowest setting?
I found that most fans running in between 2000 and 2500rpm are not so loud.
Try this setting for reasonable cooling and minimum of sound.
Ofcourse trying to hit 2400mhz could ask for much more rpm.
Also is the heatsink properly fitted?Enough paste? And does the die make full
contact with heatsink?
Sometimes ppl have the heatsink fitted turned around, this could give +10C
heat increase or even damage the cpu.
The bottom of heatsink must be fitted with the shape of it directed the same
as the shape from the socket.

Because it is cheap and I have read good reviews for it. (Shock!!)
400Mhz Front side bus will do me fine, and it seems to be okay for
most stuff. Although I have upper memory problems in MS-DOS 7.1
(win98SE), but no biggy.
At the time I only had £30! I'm in secondary school and had hardly any
money.

Today I bumped the chip up to 3200+ and put the fan to its lowest
setting. I ran 3DMark2001 (lousy result of about 1100 on Radeon
9200SE??!?!) and played Voyager Elite Force for ages and the highest
temp I got in the BIOS was about 51-53 deg C after rebooting right
after these loads.

To fuel the flames of your anti-PCChips campaign, I cannot adjust
VCore! :(

Of course I could keep the Jet7+ on high rotation all the time and get
it down to 46-49 degrees but I_CANNOT_STAND_THAT_FREAKING_NOISE...!!!
WHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOsh...whoooOOOOSSHHHH - - you get the picture, it
really is a Jet ;->

Thanks for your help guys. Anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers, I will check it out.

I wish! At the moment I have a fan in my PSU, a exhaust fan just
behind the CPU, and the same brand of case fan (Cooler Master) on top
of my Jet 7+ heatsink. Sadly I am still idling at ~49C. Last time I
looked that is, it's idling upstairs just now so I hope it's not gone
any higher! I'm on my parents' Athlon 2000+ PC which incidentally
idles at about 51C!! But that's not my problem, my PC is!

I think I will put the Jet 7+ fan back on and put the case fan at the
front since I don't have any free rear fan slots. Even now, the
exhaust fan is being held on by the plastic motherboard mounts which I
put through the screw holes!! (it doesn't have screw threads in it :|
) And I could only put on 2 mounts since I couldn't find the others,
but thankfully it is not rattling around.

AFAIK it runs at 2500RPM low. Trust me, the high setting is about
3750RPM and it is not good at all, unless you like drowning out
anything you're doing on the PC!

I hope it's okay, I fitted it the only way it would go in!! When I put
the Cooler Master blower fan back on, I think I should maybe point it
so that it pushes the hot air into the exhaust fan's path and takes it
right out. Would this work, do you think?

I hope I got it. Thanks very much for your help! I'll post back with
my progress. Thanks guys!
