iMovie: separating one stereo track into two mono tracks

I imported a DV clip into iMovie 3. The clip has one video track and
one stereo audio track. I would to separate the two channels of the
audio track into two separate tracks, one for the left and the other
for the right. Is there any way I can do this within iMovie? I'm
willing to buy a plug-in if necessary.

) Select the clip that you wish to extract the audio from by clicking on it.

2) Go to Advanced and then Extract Audio

3) If its stereo the extracted audio appears in track 1 and 2 of the
Timeline Viewer.

4) The audio can now be edited (repositioned or cropped)

It shows up as a single track. I definitely know it's stereo because I
can clearly hear different sounds out of each speaker. The sound in
the left speaker is from the microphone on the camera, and the sound in
the right speaker is from the wireless microphone clipped to my shirt.

I must be missing something, because these instructions don't work.

When I extract the audio, it creates a file in my Media folder called
"Voice 01". Is this the file I'm supposed to load into QT Pro? I have
QT 6 Pro, not QT 7 Pro. When I pull up the Properties in QT, I don't
see any Audio Settings tab (or any tabs). Instead, I get a dialog box
with two pull-down menus, one to select the movie vs. audio, and the
other to select a bunch of options. I played with all possible
combinations, and there's no option to select a track or anything like
that.

I also tried using QT to export the audio track to an AIFF file and
then loading that file. It didn't make a difference.

Please keep in mind that this is a single track of audio with two
channels. I'm trying to split the audio into two tracks.
