I'm getting ready to buy a Dell Axim PDA. I'm torn right now as to whether
I should get the X3i or the X5. I have a Canon Powershot digital camera
that uses CF cards.

The X3i doesnt use CF, only SD. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I
could transfer images from my camera to the PDA *without* the use of a
desktop? (i.e. if Im on vacation I wont have my laptop or desktop with me)

I see where Pretec sells a CF-to-SD converter. You plug that into the
camera (CF form factor) and then plug SD cards into it. Sure this would
probably work but it only supports up to 128MB SD cards.

Any other options? Should I just get the X5? I like that the X3i has
builtin 802.11b and is much smaller and lighter weight than the X5.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions!

Why you stick to the axim? There are other PDAs with 2 slots or a single CF
slot - ASUS a620, iPAQ 2210/15, FSC LOOX 610... and a few more.

Axim X5 is an old device... bulky one... with not too good LCD... other
words don't buy it.

Buy a USB universal card reader that will handle CF and SD cards, and use it
to move your files from the CF to the SD.

I disagree. The X5 was and is a good deal for the price. I have one that's
over a year old and it has worked without any problems.

Sorry, I missed your need to do it without a PC.

But now there are better PDAs in a similiar price.

Be careful selecting a CF to SD converter. The majority of them leave the SD
card sticking out a bit which precludes their use in most digital cameras in
the way you are planning. I'm not sure if the Pretec specifically has this
fault or not but you should check. I recall there is a Panasonic adapter
that does have the SD completely inside the CF form factor, but also recall
it wasn't cheap.

If the picture transfer requirement is very important to you then an X5 Axim
is a pretty decent choice at a decent price, if price is a large concern.
The dual slot capability will allow you to put the camera's CF card into the
device and transfer the shots to an SD card. Remember there is not a great
amount of memory in the PPC, you'll need extra storage cards to copy the
shots too. In this case you'll be buying SD cards to transfer the files to,
instead of just buying extra CF cards to put in the camera. Not sounding too
economical is it. Now if you were just thinking of using the PPC as a
display, that's different.

I have an Axim X5, I love it. I have no complaints.

Yes, I have one of those, and it's the only one I've ever seen
that has the SD card completely enclosed in the CF card format.
All others have the SD card sticking out, or parts of the reader
stucking out. Brando sells them, with a PCMCIA adapter thrown in
for $55 (http://shop.brando.com.hk/panasonicsdcfadapter.php).

It depends on what you classify as "better".
