4150 and yellow screens
Forum PDA : Windows Mobile - 4150 and yellow screens
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.pocketpc (More info?)
hi all.
sorry for bringing this up again (im sure a few of you are bored of this by
now), but i just wanted to get an update on the situation (ive been
following groups and google) but now that i actually have one - terribly
yellow screen an all - i was wondering what my options were.
are any of you happy with your 4150's screen? if so, were you lucky first
off or did you get a replacement? from the retailer or HP directly? or dont
you actually beleive there was an issue at all? can we tell by serial/batch
numbers which have the better screens? are the latest ones fixed (cos mine
is a few days old and isnt!).
again apologies for brining this up again, but the yellow really makes the
unit unusable.

My iPAQ's 4150 screen is yellow only when I look at it from the bottom and
it does not disturb me. My friend has also 1940 and there the screen is
yellow all the time (and this is normal) but still you can get used to it

will you be gunning for an exchange from either the retailer or HP?
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.pocketpc (More info?)
Spammy,
I thought that maybe the yellow-beige tint issue had gone away as I have
not heard about it for about 6 weeks and in looking at the new ones at the
stores, have not seen it except for a tiny amount of beige tinting if you
tilt the bottom up. The problem is the backlighting and not the screen as
they work fine outside with no backlight.
On my 4355 I had to go thru 3 of them to get a good one. The dealer took
the first one back but the replacement was almost as bad, we went thru all 9
he had in stock and same issue. Next one was sent to HP and the returned one
was much better and I was going to keep it until I saw a friends that had
almost no tint at all. So..one more time back to HP and now finally have one
that hardly has a tint. It seems like there are several bad batches out
there as the second one from HP had a very new serial number, but the third
one has a older number, but works perfectly.
I have found that HP returns for bad screens is a no questions asked
fast return. I think because HP got so much bad coverage on the Journada
PDA's and the claim that they were 64K color screens when they were only 16K
has made HP very touchy about screen issues. I have heard no problems on US
or Europe returns, only some on Australian/New Zealand returns and that was
fixed after the bad ones were sent to the US.

The tint seems to vary from unit to unit. I went through 4 myself before
finding one that isn't too bad. It's still annoying though. The worst one I
had was a very strong yellow even when viewed from directly overhead. This
one is creamy from overhead and gets yellowish with a slight tilt. I also
had dead pixels in the first 2 I had.
Basically I think HP chose to use a cheaper/lower-power screen+backlight
solution for this model, in order to squeeze wifi+BT into a smaller/cheaper
package than the 55xx.
If you're not happy with the tint then try swapping it. Be prepared to swap
it multiple times though, and bear in mind you will never find one that's
perfectly white. It's a different type of screen to what's in the 22xx and
55xx.

I have an excellent screen on my 4100. It's noticably smaller
than the one in my 3970, but contrast is better. And the 3900
was the PPC screen champ for a long time (in all regards...
except speed; it's so slow compare to newer PPCs).
If you have a cream tint, don't use white backgrounds, like this
http://40th.com/pic/index.html
I can see the cream on a white background but only when viewed
off the perpendicular, something I don't normally do since you
can't make out the screen at those angles, anyway.

Spammy,
If your local retailer will work with you and let you try a few out,
then that's the way to go as you can tell right off if its better or not.
Going to HP means you could end up trading a few before you find one that is
good as I do not think that HP looks at the replacement before they send one
out. I ended up going to HP as my vendor only had 3-4 and all looked like
mine or worse. Its a lot easier to get a good feel for it if you can hold
your old one up at the same time as a new one and look at it. Actually my
dealer laid all 4 out flat on a table and we both bent down to almost our
knees and stood up watching the displays. That made it simple to pick the
good from the bad.

the problem is that i bought mine online - im guessing this process isnt too
easy (as well as cheap) by post! also, the chances are that all the
retailers stock are from the same source/batch, whereas HP will have access
to the latest (and possibly fixed).
ill see what both parties have to say and post back here.

tedd,
just called HP, and they said that the best they would do is a repair and
not a replacement. is that what they did with you? im not sure if id like my
brand new ipaq "repaired" - but then if it means a good screen it should be
worth it.
the retailer as i mentioned is online, and reckons that if i ask them for a
replacement ill get a unit from the same batch anyway (and so with a yellow
tint). they think i should go with the HP repair (although i guess they
would).
what do you guys think? would you go for a repair (its less than a week old)
or replacement that may probably give me a unit just as yellow? maybe i
should try one replacement, and if that doesnt work out, get to HP?

Spammy,
When HP says "repair" on a new unit, that really means "if its a easy,
well known, cost effective fix, then we will fix it, if its not, then we
will replace it" Was told that by a supervisor of the tech group and it
makes sense as they want to keep replacement/repair costs low.
First time I called, that is what they said about the "repair", I told
them that was not acceptable to me for a brand new unit and reminded them
about all the class action suits that were filed against HP with the Jornada
5XX series not having the correct resolution to them and threw in for good
measure that this is almost a daily post on this board about the units and
yellow screens and to me its a bad batch or design flaw (HP gets very touchy
if you mention "design flaws" <g> ) So I was put on hold for about 30
seconds and got a manager on the phone asking for my address so they could
send out a prepaid UPS mailer. Model returned was not my original (checked
serial numbers).
So..as Nike (the shoe company) would say, "Just say NO"
Try that approach and see if it works, if they refuse you can always
push it harder and ask for their fax number so you can make a formal legal
complaint or.....If repair is the only option, then take it. HP repair is
usually excellent and fast and in your case would probably just mean they
put a new display on it as there is really not to much to debug. The screen
either works or it doesn't.
Buying Online it really depends on who you got it from. If its
MobilePlanet, Staples, OfficeMax, Office Depot or Amazon they will almost
always take it back. Others are hard to say.
Hope that helps a little.

guys,
just thought id update the story so far (just in case anyone is following it
on google or something).
my yellow 4150 went back to the retailer around 2 weeks ago - a new unit
came back in 3 days, this time a malaysian model (instead of a asian pacific
one?), but the screen was still unusably yellow.
since it cost me quite a lot to send this back, i decided to try the HP
route. the malay 4150 went back last tuesday, via UPS, and i got it back
today. the note inside says that the "LCM" (?) was changed with no effect,
but then the mainboard was changed and the unit is now "much better".
theres still a yellow tint, but it seems to be less than before. im not sure
if this is a real change or me just "subconscously settlling". either way,
im still not happy and so i am going to call HP again (i asked for a new
wallet thing too since the one in the box was a bit misshapen but i got the
same one back) and ask them to take another look.

Hey Spammy,
Yikes you sure are having a time getting a decent unit !
I have seen "LCM" as both "Light Control Module" (ie video driver board) and
as "Liquid Crystal Module" as you really have two screens, the LCD and the
digitizer screen.
My "no goes" where 2 from China, 1 from Malaysia and finally the working
one from Korea. I thought HP got this cleared up as there has been little
talk of it recently, but when the local Office Max got a new shipment the
manager was nice enough to let me look at all 5 at the same time. One was
horrible, very yellow, 2 of them were not too bad and had the crème color
tint and 2 were clear with almost no tint at all. All came from Korea and a
range of about 1000 difference in serial numbers. (these were on 4355's)
Seems like a never ending mystery on these !

hey tedd
thanks for responding (again!). both of mine were made in taiwan - any idea
about yours? im guessing it was the same. maybe the screen just has a large
"range" to be passed as of good quality?
like i said im going to send it back again (whats one more week?) and im
going to say it doesnt look like the one in my local shop (which it doesnt).
interestingly ive just had a look at my firmware version - its now sep '03
as opposed to feb 04 when i sent it back. so they did change SOMETHING!
