I recently purchased the AIW Pro 9800 (128m).

Using it with my 21" monitor has amazing clarity and I am totally
pleased with it.

When I moved my system to use my Hitachi 53" HDTV for output (using
the red component out cable), I have but nothing but disappointed.
The display is so bad that I can't even read the text. What's weird
is if I switch cables and use the svideo out, the display is much
better.
I have to believe that my settings are way off because my tv displays
HD broadcasts beautifully.

Can anyone tell me if they use the HD (component out) output and ARE
happy with it and if so, can I ask what you did (settings, etc.) to
get a good output display?

I am using MS 2005 XP Media Center and the newest ATI drivers.

Thanks in advance to all the gurus out there...your responses are
greatly appreciated.

According to the specs, the AIW 9800 Pro doesn't have a component out.
It has:
1 x A/V In
1 x CATV In
1 x A/V Out (which should be the s-video port)
1 x DVI Connector

Component requires 3 cables, usually labeled red, green and blue.

Perhaps your card has a composite out, which would be a lower resolution
than s-video.

I don't believe there are any cards now available that will *output*
hdtv in component or dvi.

Hmmmm, my AIW 9800 PRO came with a HDTV cable and it is mentioned in
the manual on page 35.
It is sold seperately on ATI's site here:

Thanks for taking the time to respond...

I am using the HDTV cable with a 42" Sony plasma. I don't think I had to do
anything with the ATI, but had to change the input setting on my TV, as it
could accept either Y/C or RGB on the inputs.

This cable converts s-video to component. You are still limited to s-
video resolutions and you still do not have a component out. The
inclusion of this adaptor does not imply that your card is capable of HD
output, since you do not have true component out, you have no way of get
a HD signal to your television.

You also have to use all three cables (red, blue, green) of the adaptor,
not just the red cable as you ealier posted.

Bit late to be responding to this thread, but you are mistaken about what
that cable does. It does not have anything to do with S-video. That thing
that looks like an S-video connector is in a multipin DIN connector with a
pinout proprietary to ATI and does in fact have component outputs.

As for not having component-out, ATI has _always_ required a separate cable,
adapter, dongle, or some such to get component.

As for not being able to get an HD signal to a television, I can do this
with a 9800 Pro, and anything the Pro can do in that regard the AIW can do.
