Is there such a creature? I have a USB cable to connect to my cell phone and
I'd love to be able to connect my iPAQ 2215 and surf the web while "in the
field". All I need is a card that can host a standard serial device...And I
don't even think it'd need to be powered...

Socket sells a serial card (w/DB9), but it's $100, IIRC. Somebody posted a
link on this NG a few weeks ago about a USB host card "coming soon" with no
pricing info.

It would probably be cheaper just to get a dedicated PDA to phone cable from
a place like www.gomadic.com- they sell cables for connecting the iPaq to
most popular phones. (I assume your phone doesn't have IR? Otherwise you
could connect without a cable.)

Suspected as much...

Hmm, a decent option (but would become useless when I upgrade my pda in a
couple years [hopefully])...'cept they don't list my phone (Samsung
A620/VGA1000) but I might consider this option (I suspect their Samsung
connector is the right one, Samsung seems to use a common connector
formfactor.) Thanks for the info!

That's the reason I've always tried to buy phones w/IR ports (and now
bluetooth)- since I change phones, PPCs or both every couple of years
I'd rather not shell out $40 on proprietary cables each time!

The neat thing about Gomadic, at least according to their web site, is
that they have a trade-in program- when you change phones or PDAs, you
send in that half of the cable (their cables are all two pieces- the
PDA and cellphone halves all interlock in the middle with same
connector) and they exchange it for a small fee.

E-mail them to be sure- they probably can't update the website as fast
as manufacturers can crank out new phones! (I remember when the
product lifespan of a cellphone was 18-24 months- these days it seems
more like 3-6!)
