I took my fairly new CDM8940 into the Verizon store because I know
there is a new software update. (D160VE4T08_4.174) I left the phone,
came back later, and they told me I need a new phone. When I asked
why, I was told "the update didn't work". I asked if my phone still
works, they said yes. I told them to give me back my phone and left.
I have a feeling they're just clueless. Should I try a different
store, or let them give me a new phone for no reason? I've had
firmware updates done all the time, and never had this "problem".

I do not understand the question. They want to give you a new phone for
free or they want you to buy a new phone. Give or Buy both produce self
evident answers to me.

What additional fucntionality will this firmware update give you? I guess
it really doesn't matter, but when you make claims they need to give you a
new phone, it brings up the issue of what the hell are you willing to fight
for a new phone for a stupid firmware update?
If they're telling you need a new phone, then they should explain why you
need a new phone. Coming in this forum and saying they told you need a new
phone isn't enough information to determine if the people at the store were
idiots or not.
Get more information, ask questions, come back and post your questions and
experience then we will all be able to give a more informed answer.

Actually, the last time I upgraded, I went to one of the small authorized
Verizon resellers and got great service and a better price on the phone. The
last several times I went to the main Verizon store in my town, the service
was awful.

The question is, why would the morons at this particular Verizon Store
want to give me a new phone (free) for no reason? There is nothing
wrong with my phone. I just went to get the latest software for it.
Unfortunately, nobody at this particular store was capable of doing
it, so they just offered to give me a new phone. FWIW, another store
was able to upgrade my phone this afternoon, no problem.

I just went to a smaller store in another town, and they did the
upgrade no problem. In the future, if I ever need a new phone, I'll go
back to the other store since they want to give away free phones for
no reason. <shrug>

That is the version I had. The new version is D160VE4T08_4.174. The
list of changes/fixes hasn't been posted yet. There are no new
settings, and it does not fix the useless speakerphone.

Ok, I'm trying to get a grip on this.
You went to a VZW store for a firmware upgrade which
you have no idea what fixes it contains (if any).
They couldn't do the upgrade and offered you a new
phone for free. This made them idiots.
You declined the free new phone and went somewhere
else to get the firmware upgrade (which possibly might
not fix anything and could even remove functionality?).
Is that about it?

Ummm yes. I guess because they're incompetent, they just give away
$400 phones. Once again for those that don't understand, there is
nothing wrong with my phone. The idiots were incapable to do a simple
upgrade, and offered me a free phone for no reason. My old phone still
had the original firmware and still worked. All I asked for was a
software update, and they wanted to give me a new phone for free. If
my phone wasn't only a month old, I would have taken them up on their
stupid offer. I went to another local Verizon Store, and they updated
my phone in a few minutes. ....And I do know it fixes something. I
looked it up. It fixes a problem with the phone going into extended 1x
network, and also trying to use VZW EVDO. The phone would drop the
call and reset.

Excuse me for interrupting your delightful thread of wisdom, but if you wish
to continue to respond to such childish behavior of a mentally challenged
individual who has clearly demonstrated a complete lack of proper judgment,
then you continue to authorize an ignorant individual with a short temper,
who is most likely to cause a fatal accident behind the wheel due to road
rage from reading complete nonsense from a Usenet Newsgroup Thread.
Do not entertain the mentally challenged. Allow them to be silenced by
exercising your right to remain silent.
Both of you have exhibited a total lack of respect for one another.
Now, apologize and go to bed.

I've been to 3 Verizon stores in the last 3 months I've been a wireless
customer. The sales staff at all 3 locations were knowledgeable and helpful,
and saved me some money on a few occasions.
The support staff on the other hand were atrocious. They were clueless,
argumentative and arrogant. I had to deal with them at two locations and it
was a frustrating experience both times. The third location I just observed
the support guy abusing a customer while my son was buying a headset for his
phone.
I'm not a real fan of Verizon in general, but I was surprised how shoddy
they can treat people.

I had the same problem a year ago with my CDM8600. They (Verizon) up-loaded
my personal info & phone numbers into their computer prior to upgrading my
software. They said the phone would loose that information when doing an
upgrade of the firmware. Since they could not re-program my phone (it got
stuck in the middle of re-programming), they gave me a new phone with the
latest firmware. (My old phone did not work properly after the upgrade
attempt.) Fortunately, they were able to download my personal info into the
new phone. It's possible this is a problem with some of the Audiovox
phones.

Which one is it? Are you too ignorant to see the incompetence of the
Verizon Techs to perform a simple task, or do you really work for
Verizon? I think 'Just Lou' struck a nerve, and it could possibly be
both. <G>

I will say, in defense of the people flaming you, that you do tend to sound
like a broken record sometimes, like when I shared my problems with VZW and
the fact that I was dumping them, and you went into your standard spiel
about coverage, and how I shouldn't expect coverage out in the sticks. At
that point, you may remember, I had to point out that
a) this is hardly Los Angeles, but the Victor Valley is a community of about
300,000-400,000 people, not some one-stoplight town* - and
b) my problem with Verizon never was a lack of coverage, their coverage is
fine here; it was a problem with network brokenness that they failed to fix.
Your assessment of *many* of the people who complain here is accurate, since
a large number of people don't take the time to read *and understand* their
agreements, and other things relating to their account and service. However,
sometimes people *have* done their homework and *do* have valid
complaints, but your reply doesn't change.

Maybe you should chill out. You tend to go off on people even more easily
than I do, and that's saying a lot because I've been flaming people on
Usenet pretty frequently, lately.

*The one-stoplight town is about twenty miles east of here (Lucerne Valley).
Or you can head west to El Mirage, or go a little further west to Los
Angeles County and visit Pearblossom or Llano. Those towns have *no*
stoplights.

Don't feed the trolls or pick on the handicapped. Whichever one it may
be.

Was just holding it up as an example, the one I can most easily remember. I
don't hold it against you. Not anymore.

Oh, I'm not saying it's ok for others to flame you, either.

I had this happen once before with the whole failing to update thing (i needed
to update because the phone was starting to not work well). I just waited for
a week or two, tried again, and it worked. As for idiots in the Verizon
store, the store I go to here for Verizon is staffed with very knowledgeable,
friendly, and competent people (maybe I'm lucky?).

Y'know, I think you've said this before about posts that clearly weren't
spam. I think you just like to say things are spam when they aren't to stir
up reactions. And that makes you a troll. A great big mountain troll with
slimy boogers. And very stupid.

David S, please don't feed the trolls.

Actually David, YOU were the one whose reactions were disturbed by this
troll while the rest of us simply ignored him/her/it.
Always remember, those who feed the trolls are contributing to their spam
and encourage their actions, thus inviting their return.

Are we talking about Dr. News' post(s)? That primarily
promote his commercial "service"?

What the troll is really looking for is someone to argue with it about
whether the OP is really spam or not. Instead, I called it on being a
troll.
Nevertheless, you are right. I shouldn't feed trolls. I must point out,
however, that by replying with a chastisement of me for feeding the troll,
you have given the troll a much more nutritious meal than I did. (And yes,
now I'm giving it another one, which is why I hope this thread will die
right here.)
