Just spent a weekend in Schoharie and Cooperstown and was extremely
disappointed in Verizon's coverage. We had 3 phones on both AC-I and AC-II
and all three performed alike. In Cooperstown the strongest signal we had
was two bars on all phones. In Schoharie we had "no service" on all three
phones. We were traveliing with my my cousin who was visiting from Chicago
and he had an AT&T cellphone. His phone had 5 bars consistently (extended
network - his home area is Chicago) in Schoharie and Cooperstown. We wound
up using his phone all weekend. Is this typical of the coverage in all of
Upstate NY or just Otsego County ?

Here in the Hudson Valley ( Ulster, Dutchess, Orange) I seem to get the
better coverage with Verizon than people I know with other carriers.
However, when you head North, and get into Green County, things change
dramatically. When I go to Hunter Mountain in the winter for skiing, there's
a 20 mile stretch on Route 28 where I get no service, kind of like the
silence though.....

My daughter lived in Cooperstown for a little while, and the Verizon coverage
was terrible, with phone calls often dropping completely. We live up in the
Utica-Rome area, with our "children" living around Syracuse, Cortland, and
Fredonia, and we have never seen that anywhere other than Cooperstown.

You'd think Cooperstown being smack dab in the middle of nowhere might have
something to do with that. On the other hand, it *is* a tourist destination.

Maybe there are a lot of NIMBYs there?

The location must be one big factor. Perhaps the zoning as well - as I
recall, fast food places are prohibited.

When I travel up I-88 towards Schoharie and to Cooperstown we use Verizon
service. On certain spots on I-88 we have no service. However we do have
service in both places albeit it likes to switch from Digital to Analog at
times. The question of why the AT&T service (Cingular) was stronger would
tend to make me wonder why your phone did not grab the stronger signal since
the companies have cross use capabilities. Now If I use the Thruway to get
to Cooperstown I have a strong signals the whole way. Now if you take
Western Avenue (Route 20) there are spots where service is not to great.
Depends on the way you travel. And I live in Albany which is upstate NY and
I very rarely have no service signals when I travel. I must be lucky :-)

What type of phones. All the same, three different types? That would help
to see if there is a problem.
I had a vx4500 would always drop calls in the same spot. My v60s and vx3200
do not.

So the phone does sometimes have an effect, plus they were doing some
upgrading to the system according to press releases, and that could also
affect it. But I don't ,live in that area and really can't say anyways.

Other carriers don't do well here at ALL. It AMAZES me to see how many
places still carry these other carriers. I couldnt get a good explanation
from the t-mobile guys why i couldnt get service from their OWN store at
the pok galleria mall.

Lots of folks come in from out of state for school (marist/vassar) and find
their cell phones are virtually useless. especially if you're on a GSM
network.

Do you have a tri-mode or all digital phone?

When is the last time you updated your PRL? (*228, option 2)

Never knew fast food was prohibited in Cooperstown. Kind of ironic, since
that's all you get at a baseball game.

The three Verizon phones were: LG-VX8000, Motorola V710 and an LG-V6000. All
with updated PRLs.

All the more reason to have a 99 cent, cigarette-lighter-powered bagphone
on AMPS stashed in the trunk for emergencies. I bet it works in
Cooperstown...if you have an emergency...(c;

Actually that is changing, as we speak. We just dumped Verizon for
Cingular, and are very happy with the coverage. The places where we
used to go to no signal with Verizon now show 4-5 bars, consistently.
I'm sure that Cingular has weak areas too, but I haven't found any yet.
Poughkeepsie, Wappingers, Fishkill, Hopewell, all work reliably well.
It's so nice not to have to charge your phone twice a day, just to keep
it on standby. On Route 9 and on the Aterial, you get a consistent 4
bars with EDGE from Cingular. Go to the back roads, and if you're not
near a city center you'll get 2-3 bars GPRS. If you're getting tired
of Verizon's games, try it.

Went up to Lake Placid last weekend. Once we got into the Adirondack Park
east of Watertown, reception was hit or miss... you got a signal in
populated areas and no signal in unpopulated areas. Obviously the cell
companies aren't going to provide a signal for the bears and deer where
there's practically zero population. There's also environmental/zoning
issues up there as well preventing towers from going up.

We were camping at the Adirondack Loj and we had no signal there until we
drove 5 minutes or so towards Lake Placid.

My friends with Cingular got similar results.

Otherwise, here in the Rochester area, reception is fairly solid - even when
I go down to Hornell and other places in the region that's cow country.
