The hair-brained schemes thread.

I'm trying to think of ways to increase the effectiveness of my watercooling system. Not to go overboard mind you, just enough to get the processor around room temp.

My first thought was running a long length of copper pipe down to the sump-pump area. There's always a small pool of water down there that gets replenished by ground water.

Problem is, I'm about 60 feet from that area, and I don't think my Eheim water pump would appreciate that.

Yeah, but that uses a lot of water, and it can get expensive.

Alternatively, you could use a combination. Use the sump pump to feed a tank in the room with the computer, and then use the pump in your computer to feed a length of hose in the sump water, so that the cold sump water cools the computer water. That might work a bit better, and be a bit more economical.

You could also use an old fridge/freezer/air conditioner compressor to cool a bunch of water, and use that through the cooling system. Having 1-2 degree water (add antifreeze so it won't be circulating ice) running through there instead of 25 degree water would make for some nice cooling, and a fun project too.

thats what i will be setting up my watercooling setup from (going to be welding barbs onto it tomorrow) - a 1967 Buick heater-core, its 12 1/2" long by 6 wide and 2 1/2" thick, and no corrosion, no dirt, nothing... just a matter of building a stylin' (lol) retention mechanism... i've even seen someone cool with no fan by using a massive radiator (probably about 24" on all sides, and about 3" thick)... might be an option - or use the "fish tank" idea - fill a tank with the water you'll use, and since its a huge pool of the water it'll cool alot easier and closer to room temp

au contraire, it doesn't lower temps, it just prevents corrosion and algae build up. if it created lower temps, you'd run nothing BUT that in your engine/computer
it doesn't hurt the thermal properties of the water too badly though, so it's good stuff

Nobody's going to use JUST that, because it doesn't lower the freezing point of water, and thus doesn't do the job of an antifreeze. Its proper use means mixing it WITH water; one bottle per about every 14 quarts.

Ummm... you do realize that was posted in keeping with the "hairbrained shemes" subject of the thread... I do know one guy who tried it, but I certainly would never recommend it.

Enough with the water wetter. Everybody knows that mustard is the best computer coolant.

Hehehe, I like the AC line idea. That would result in a horrible death. But who cares.

Grab an old water chiller that some company is throwing out , one of those bubbler thingos they used on town water and electricity before they invented the spring water dispenser. Plug it into the mains near your computer, connect the water inlet to a small container with pump and complete the circuit by removal of the tap and connect this through to your cpu water block and other end back to container and you have refrigerated water circulating and after an hour it will probably be near zero deg celcius. Gees use a toilet water tank and float system for container and syphon the water with a tap and connect back to town water via float for drinkable chilled water as well.

Or maybe one of those new Spring water units where the water goes into a small cooling chamber below, we had one of these where I used to work, just drill two holes here, an inlet and an outlet, then you have multi purpose chilled spring water and cpu cooler. I actually just bought one of those water coolers for home about a month ago... I might just have to give that a try!

Yeah thats what I was thinking... Taking the chiller out of the water cooler and inserting it into the flow after the RAD. Now I'm wishing I picked up two of these while they were on sale for $80! One for, well...a watercooler, and one for my PC!
