My Cingular contract is up in a week and I'm thinking about giving Verizon a
try. I already know that Verizon has better coverage in parts of Tennessee
that I will be visiting. So I'm looking for a flip phone that has good
reception and good earpiece volume. I'm completely open to advice on
Verizon's phone selection even non-flip phone choices. I'll be buying 2
phones when I sign up so cost will have a little effect on my choices.
Thanks much in advance.

Take a look at the Motorola V265. They have a deal on. Its a good
phone with a so-so camera - but try sending pics to your email rather
than relying on the phone to assess the pics.

I'll take a look at the Moto, I did forget to mention that it'd be a
plus if the phone had blue tooth since I've been using my little blue
tooth dongle on my laptop to send and receive pix and ringtones to my
T616 Sony phones. I'm not afraid of cables however.

Bluetooth and Verizon? That quickly narrows it down to ONE phone: Motorola
V710

Whoa! If you intend to use the Moto v710 Bluetooth to send and receive
pics and ringtones, you gonna be disappointed! Check this link:

....and this one:

Verizon has deliberately broken the Bluetooth on the v710 so that you
will have to PAY them to get the pictures off your $400 phone! Aaargh!

Ben:
You are right on target to be seeking a tri-mode phone, especially for parts
of Tennessee. Unfortunately, Verizon is phasing out phones with analog so
they won't have to carry analog forever. Be very careful as you make your
selection. Most of what you see in the store will be dual mode, not
tri-mode.

May I give you an example? For several years, Verizon has sold the Kyocera
SmartPhone series--first the 6035 and then the 7035. However, they are no
longer offering the phones on the web site and the supply in stores is
dwindling. That's because it is a tri-mode phone.

For those whose fat fingers cannot manipulate tiny keyboards (and who are
not intimidated by Graffitti), this is a sad state of affairs. The new
"wonder phones" being marketed to business folks are dual mode, only.
Today's handsets are great tools--an office in the palm of your hand, so to
speak. However, the basic requirement is that the device function as a cell
phone. Without analog, there will be many places where the phone displays NO
SERVICE. With analog, you can make/receive calls almost everywhere.

Granted, the SmartPhone may be more than you need--and purchasing two could
be pricey. I mentioned this only to illustrate where Verizon is headed.
Alltel, on the other hand, will activate an old analog-only phone, if you
wish. Only a few of us "die hards" keep using boat anchors like the
UltraClassic and bag phones. But it demonstrates Alltel's commitment to
maintaining analog service for a few years to come.

Summary: Read the fine print to determine what frequencies a particular
model offers. If you don't find something to your liking at Verizon, check
Alltel for reasonably-priced tri-mode phones.

Paul: What I'm about to tell you reflects on your post. Last night I
bought (finally found) an Audiovox CDM 9900 (tri-mode). Of course tri-mode
was real high on the list of prerequisits. I looked up how to force analog
as I used to do with my Audiovox 9155. Once in the DEBUG mode, the list of
"modes" is remarkable! You can choose Automatic, Digital only, Cellular
only, Analog only, CDMA only, PCS only, PCS channel. What's with all these
other operating modes? Wow.

That's the same network selections as my Audiovox 9500. CDMAngels
forum has a lot of that info.
Basically you select certain networks and exclude others.
PCS channel is cool. Find out what channel SPCS uses in any market
(Andrew Shepherd's web site Cinema.ed?,lists PCS channel numbers) then
set that channel number and roam on Sprint. This setting bypasses the
PRL.

VZW will remain CDMA. They would have to close the doors and
start from scratch to switch (including the entire radio network and
phones).

I live in TN. I can tell you that VZW has excellent TN coverage. I
have been using an all digital for over a year now and have never had a
problem getting a signal. I do a lot of traveling between west and
middle TN including some small towns. I do have a tri-mode phone
(v60i) that I keep around in case I need it, but I have not had a need
to switch back.

Actually, the long term plans of the GSM carriers are to go to CDMA,
albeit the WCDMA version which, while using a CDMA air prototol, retains
the GSM network infrastructure. As opposed to VZW, which is evolving to
the various protocols in the CDMA-2000 family (1xRTT, 1xEvDO, etc).

[Cynical Mode]
Cingular/AT&T will probably start doing this as soon as they have
converted everyone from TDMA to GSM.

FYIW, Siemens just won major contract to build Cingular's 3G network.
Will start work in 2005.
Cingular will be a force to be recond among cellcos. I just hope they
don't forget the rural areas in the GSM change over.

Don't hold your breath... They have to get everybody on GSM?
Equipment change -- network and phones. Then to get to 3G
they will need to go to WCDMA as mentioned above. Equipment
change -- network and phones. Yea right. It's not going to happen
in your life time. I suspect you may not see the change over to
all GSM in your life time. People are not happy when they're
told "we have to turn everything off for a few months while we
swap all the equipment. Please be patient while you stand in
line. Free coffee will be served."
