I was eligible for the upgrade pricing and new-every-two credit on
September 1st, so I went to the friendly neighborhood Verizon store on
that date.

I told the salesperson I wanted to upgrade to the V710, and needed to
check out what Bluetooth headsets he had, so I could see whether they
worked with my hearing aid.

So he got a V710 from the stock room and transferred the address book
and appointments from my V60i to it. He asked whether I wanted to
continue the insurance (I did) and said that I'd keep my old plan
(Western Single Rate with 3000 N&WE mins, and evening minutes starting
at 8 PM unless I wanted to change plans (I didn't).

He activated the phone, and then showed me the Motorola HS 820, which
was the only BT headset they had that could possibly work with my
hearing aid. It seemed to fit OK, so I bought it too. After about five
days of use, it works fine; I do get a slight amount of feedback if it's
not seated perfectly, but that's very easy to correct.

My total price was $219 for the phone and $79 for the headset before the
$70 mail-in rebate for the phone.

No fuss, no muss, and no hassles--and no problem at all keeping my old
plan; this is the third model of phone (all three of them being
Motorola) I've had on this plan.

The big question is, how well does it work with the Prius's Bluetooth
option?

Other than that you can't upload the address book to the Prius, it works
very well. There are a few minor glitches, though:

When connected via bluetooth to a handsfree device, the phone disables
its own voice dialing, and expects the handsfree device to handle it,
but the Prius doesn't handle voice dialing.

To get a number entered into the Prius's one-touch dialing, the number
has to be in the sent calls (made by dialing from the Prius, not from
the phone), received calls, or the phone book--you can't simply enter
the number directly into that directory.

I ascribe these problems to the Prius, not to the phone.

There is no audible ring when you receive a call; the LCD monitor on the
Prius notifies you there is one, and the audio system (if it's turned
on) blanks out.

The Prius doesn't show signal strength.

Since these work with other phones, the problem is most likely with the
phone.

Very similar story, Michelle... even the same phones!

1. 2000 v8160
2. 2002 v60i
3. 2004 v710
(Pre 2000: Mitsubishi, Diamond-Tel, Qualcomm, Qualcomm)

In my case, they gave me the new-every-two discount even though I was not on
a contract. (I sweet talked a nice sales manager).
Interesting that these mini-flip phones have been getting larger... But a
lot better!
