Hi

I used the default BIOS settings.
I inserted the Windows XP cd in tray.
Manage to format the harddrive, and copy the innstalation files.
The system reboots, and the Windows Logo appears for some seconds.
Then the screen is blank. The harddrive you can hear working for some minutes and then stops.
The monitor remains blank.
I have to force the machine to restart (not possible on keyboard).

New hardware:
Motherboard: Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
CPU: AMD64 2.2Ghz +3500
Memory: Corsair XMS C25 Kit 2 x 512MB - CL 2.5
Power: 430W PSU.

Old/used hardware:
1 hardisk 7200RPM from year 2000. Seagate.
PCI Graphic card 16 Mb or less memory

Do I have to something in BIOS to be able to install Windows XP?

I tried to install Linux, and I tried to run a "live" operating-system from a CD, but always t! he same happens: the screen turns blank before OS fully loads (the monitor turns blank when changing resolution and frequency) . The monitor LED always remains green, this means that it recieves signal.

Could it be the Video card having to little memory?

I ran diagnostics to test memory, CPU, harddrive and all turned out to be in perfect state.

Great if anybody could help

Wow! You actually got as far as installing Windows software components. I didn't even get that far.

Also using an ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe board. I don't actually need the SLI feature - my most extreme gaming is usually along the lines of Rollercoaster Tycoon 2. But I'd read (primarily in Tom's Hardware Guide, ironically) that this was one sweet board for serious AMD afficiandos like myself.

The new system boots up without incident and I can get in to the BIOS no problem. According to the BIOS, the optical drive is there and when I pop the Windows XP Pro disc in, the read light goes nuts...but nobody's home.

I've checked the IDE cable, swapped the optical drive with a known working drive, plugged it in using every known combination of slave/master primary/secondary IDE bus and... nothing.

Have also checked everywhere within the BIOS to see if there's something I've missed. My experience with building PC's (this is my third) is that if you use the default settings in the BIOS, you should be able to just pop the OS disc in and go. Am I missing something in the BIOS?

I'd ask Asus directly, but when I checked their online forum there seemed to be quite a few pissed off buyers there having all manner of problems with their boards. And Asus didn't seem too interested in giving any tech support, either, according to what I was reading in some of the posts.

So, do I press on and try to get this board to work or just throw it out and start new with something else?

Just for completeness, in case someone can offer some assistance, here's what's in the system. With the exception of the floppy drive (yes, they are still useful in some instances), all components are brand new.

the aforementioned Asus A8N SLI Deluxe motherboard
Asus Extreme N5900 PCIe graphics card
AMD 64 3200+ 2.0 GHz processor
Enermax 600W power supply
2X Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250 Gb SATA hard drives (I need lots of elbow room, what can I say?)
M Audio Delta 44 sound card
LG GSA 4163B Multidrive (DVD/CD writer)
Zalman cooling fan for AMD 64

Any help would be appreciated.

I set the PCI clock sync mode to 33.33 but no difference.

But I've discovered something more:
when trying to load a Live-OS from a CD I can see the the monitor turns blank ( monitor Led remains green )when a command is started, a command
saying something about Frequency, resolution.

I tried to Install Windows XP to an external hardisk (new, 300GB Maxtor). The Windows setup manages to format and copy all innstallation files to "the external harddrive". Then the windows setup reboots the system. When the machine is restarted I either see the Windows Logo for some seconds and then the monitor turns blank, and after forcing to restart I get the "Windows Bluescreen"

To install Windows XP using my motherboard (ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe), is the default BIOS settings ready for the innstallation? Or do I have to modify any setting in BIOS? Does the shadow/caching" have to be disabled in BIOS (where do I find this setting)?

The graphic card has 2Mb of memory. Could this be to little?
Could it be the monitor that doesnt show/support certain resolutions/frequencies?

The graphic card is the following model:
SIS 6215c GUI Accelerator (2 Mb RAM)

I checked SIS-website and could not find any drivers (for this card) for Windows XP. So my conclusion: this card is simply "old".

The card is from 1998 or even older.

So this is a Graphic Accelerator, what I need is a Graphic Card, right?

When I buy this motherboard, do I only have to plug all the hardware/cables, before innstalling Windows XP? Or if this is not the case what do I have to do?
Only 1 hardisk (ATA) I connected, do I need to configure it in the RAID
utility?

The BIOS sees the hardisk when plugged.

Damn.. how will you configure something that you have no clue about!!! I suggest you to learn a bit about RAID ..

Anyway, if you dont plan to RAID, then RAID should not be used, and you should not see the RAID tool at POST.

Disable any fu**ing RAID option in your system and it should be better..

Before digging in the clock setting, get the basic right.
