Why can't I install windows 2000 pro in millenium. It says it need an update file found in windows and its not there? My goal is to have a choice to dual boot either in Me or 2000. I have 3 partitions on my drive. One is completely empty just for win 2000. I tried installing from dos but says program does not run in dos. What can I do?

After that error message comes up, click OK and then select Clean Install. Then when there is a prompt for "advanced options", select that and then check off "Allow me to choose the installation partition during setup"

The way I did it was install Win98SE first, then Win2000, then format Win98SE partition, then install WinME there. I know, sounds a little windy...

Well the only way to do it was this way. I had a imortant data on my 2nd partition and I did not want to reformat my whole drive so I deleted partion 1. Now that I had nothing to boot with, I loaded Win 98. After i did that, I put in my Windows 2000 disk in and did a clean install on partition 3 formatted and all. Once that was installed I went back into Win 98 and installed Millennium on top of 98 without saving my current settings. Loaded all my drivers first in Millennium and then booted into 2000 and did the same. Everthing worked out awesome and I'm very impressed with 2000 pro. Now I have the best of both worlds. The nice thing about this dual boot thing is that both operating systems can share the same files because they are both fat 32 file systems. Ita almost too good to be true! Thanks!

when you try to install from DOS, if it says "bla can't be run in DOS", you are probably trying to run setup.exe..

well don't..

if you want to install win2000 from DOS,

u must run
/i386/winnt

(damn dos.. of course in dos it's BS \ not good ol unix / :D )
like in win NT 4 and 3...

it will work fine !

Remember win2k has 2 setup programs...

i386\winnt.exe this one is for use under dos
i386\winnt32.exe This one runs under windows

If I run WINNT it reports something about SMARDRIVE is not running or install ... and I have an option to bypass it. In doing so, the installation process took forever. Any other suggestion anyone?

MAIN APPLICATIONS:
3D MODELING, GRAPHICS AND VIDEO EDITING.

THIS COMPUTER IS SETUP AS A MAIN WORKSTATION WHERE OTHER TWO COMPUTERS (DUAL PII 266 DESKTOP, AND PIII 700 LAPTOP) IS HOOK UP THROUGH A HUB FOR PRINTER AND SCANNER SHARING.

copy smartdrv.exe from your windows folder to the drive with the i386 folder on it. run smartdrv with no switches then run winnt.exe

It should be in the c:/windows folder on a win9x machine its only a 45k file.

W2k has a bootable cd-rom. If your bios supports the cd-rom booting then you can run the installation program off the cd-rom directly.
