i have an issue to fix with my Mandrake 9.2 box. When i'm in "highest" security mode i can't ssh to my server from my local network or Internet. Note:
1- my router is forwarding port 22 (and 23) to the box
2- sshd is running
3- not using key authentication
4- firewall is off
5- other network traffic is flowing nicely (httpd & smb)
6- tried multiple ssh clients (putty, mindterm, jta, Tectia Client)
anyone have an idea?
Solution found!!!:
when mandrake is in security level 4 it writes the following line the /etc/host.deny :
ALL:ALL EXECPT 127.0.0.1ENY
obviously this is wrong and causes the problem. i commented it out and ssh to my box worked again. could always do a chattr +i to /etc/host.deny so the mandrake control center doesn't mess with it again.
i'll leave the post up for reference.
