How do I get those numbers and how do I know how powerful my Video Card is running?

You can start by downloading the free versions of 3dmark2001se and 3dmark03 from http://www.futuremark.com
Post your scores and people should be able to tell you how your system compares. Also Aquamark3 is another common synthetic benchmark that will give you #'s. Many games come with a built in benchmark or fps(frames per second) tool. What games do you play? Download the UT2003 demo and it has a benchmark tool built in as well as a way to see your fps while playing. A utility called fraps can display your current fps while playing games. Just search them out on Google and they should be easy to find. I like to test and compare number too, But most importantly, how are your games playing? How do they look?

Just bought an ATI Radeon 9600XT 128mb

The games I'm currently playing are, BF1942 with all the expansions and mods, Pro Evolution SOccer 3, Star Wars: Knights of the old republic

3dmark2001se gives me an error when I try to run it, it says I need directX 8.1 but I have version 9 installed

Yes, if you have Direct X 9, 3dmark 2001 wont run because it needs DX 8. Just run 3dmark 2003.

Nevermind, just checked and it's integrated into the current installer. It used to be that you would download the program and the update (build 330) and install both--now it's all incorporated in one installer. Try reinstalling DX9 maybe.

However, 2001SE isn't the best gauge for graphics card performance...it's a lot more reliant on the CPU than 2003.

3Dmk01 WILL run with DX9. Look at the Catalyst review sticky of mine. I have MANY examples of it working with 3Dmk01. Get the LATEST example it will work, otherwise yes you have to patch it to the latest version.
