Looking for opinions on the above. I am a business user, with the following
needs:
- Documents (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
- Book reading
- Basic functions (address, etc)
- Couple of dictionaries (standard and French-English)
- Note taking and reference

I am torn between LD and T5. I hear the T5 has great battery life (a Major
consideration). The LD has that great storage capacity, but it is supposed
to be slow (due to hd) and have poor battery life.

Any comments?

The LifeDrive is too new a device for an average, non-technically versed
user. And I mean versed.

I am software engineer and I love the device. But even with my constant
(well, almost) attention, it's still not as stable as my old faithful
Clié NR70V in its worst days. As long as Palm doesn't release at least
one major update fixing NVFS problems, average users should really keep
their hands away from it.

Besides, considering your needs here above, you don't really need a
LifeDrive. I would go for the T5 if I were you, but be aware that it
also have issues.

Greetings,
Laurent

From what I have seen with my LifeDrive and my T5, what you say is true.
(BTW: I still like my LifeDrive better right now - but battery life is not
that important to me and the slow downs are only annoying.)

The T5 does everything you need, so if the battery life is more important
than storage (you can always get a 1GB SD card for your T5), then go with
the T5.

Many thanks to both you and Laurent for the clear and concise comments. I
will follow your advice.

T5 for me, thinner, no fragile hard drive. but then, I've never
filled up my M515.

I think the LifeDrive is the coolest PDA on the market, and is certainly the
most attractive, but it is simply waaaay too thick for my tastes. A T5 without
the cover is about half as thick as a LD. Battery life on my T5 has been
excellent.

I agree: cool and attractive. IMHO, these criteria are for superfluous and
unsophisticated people. I am sure that they will be happy with their cool and
attractive LifeDrive. I bought one and I returned it after a couple of weeks

And what did your name-calling add to this dialog? Sophisticated people
typically don't have to resort to name-calling in order to feel good
about themselves.

I had been using a Tungsten|T3 for a couple of years, and been very
happy with it. Mainly I ran;

1. Agendus
2. SmartList-to-Go
3. eReader
4. Repligo
5. SnapperMail
6. Documents-to-Go

The Tungsten|T3 worked well with my Motorola V600 Bluetooth enabled
phone so I could always check my e-mail. And the other programs all
worked as advertised. I rely on my Palm so much that in the unlikely
event I leave home without it, I will drive back home and get it.

When the LifeDrive came out, I looked at it and really didn't see
anything that it did that I really NEEDED.

A couple of weeks ago I got a nice bonus from a client and since it
was found money I figured since the Tungsten|T3 was out of
production I should probably check out the new Palms. I literally
spent about four hours in CompUSA playing with the Tungsten|T5 and
the LifeDrive.

Since it was found money, I bought the LifeDrive. I spent the next
week downloading upgrades to my base software. My LifeDrive now does
everything that my Tungsten|T3 did. Plus a few extra. Having both
Bluetooth and Wi-fi is a big plus. I don't know about your part of
the World, but here in Idaho more and more free hotspots are popping
up every week. There are though still places I go where there is no
free wi-fi so I use my cell phone.

Now one of the big things that the LifeDrive totes is its 4GB hard
disk. To be honest for the first ten days, I was afraid to rely on
it. Now that I am not having to hard reset the LifeDrive because of
software incompatibilities I have begun using the hard disk. I have
to tell you being able to carry hours of music, a couple of movies
and all of my reference materials is flat out wonderful.

One of the things that you will hear people complain about is the
speed. It is definitely slower than the Tungsten|T5. But we're not
talking about minutes. We are talking about seconds. I don't do
anything where seconds are mission critical so I don't really worry
about it. If speed is a major issue for you, then I would have to
say go with the Tungsten|T5.

In closing I will say that if I had it to do again, I would buy the
LifeDrive with earned money if there was no found money to spend.

Do sophisticated people have to point out the unsophistication of other
people to feel good about themselves? ;-)

Truly sophisticated people don't give a damn about sophistication. It's the
poseurs that worry about it.

Absotively! And for those who don't care about sophistication, there's
"class". And then there's "cool". All of which fit what you described.

This is a bit off topic, but since you have/had both a T3 and a
LifeDrive, I thought I'd ask. I too upgraded from a T3 to a
LifeDrive. I love the LifeDrive, but somehow, when I migrated
software from the T3, I killed the WiFi. Anytime I try to do anything
with WiFi on the LifeDrive, it reboots itself. Did you see anything
like this?

Thanks,

So how can you love your LifeDrive when it acts up like that?

Yes, I saw things like that and that was one of the reasons why I returned it.

BTW, I installed all the 3rd party stuff from scratch w/o migrating it from
my other Palm.

One suggestion. Do a HotSync, do a hard reset, do a new HotSync with a new
HotSync name chosen for your LifeDrive, use it as it is without installing
any new stuff on it, and then, once all is stable, if ever, then install new
stuff one-by-one only. Install, test, install, test, etc.

In other words, use common sense and do not rush.

Good luck.

Hi Barry,

Occasionally I will get a soft reset when I am trying to connect to
a secure network. Other than that w-fi works fine. I use it every

I love it because it does everything I needed it for, and it does it
quite well. It replaces my T3 quite nicely, and provides all the
functionality that my T3 did, plus lots more storage. WiFi is a nice
extra that I do want to get working eventually, but, for me, it is not
an essential.

I probably should have done that too, but I followed the install
instructions, not realizing that I was migrating apps.

Of course, that will work, but I think I'd rather try to figure out
what's going on. I won't learn anything from incremental installing,
except which program is screwing things up. I may have to go this
route eventually, but I'd rather try to understand just what happened
first.

Hi C.

What kind of upgrades did you download for your LifeDrive.
And where did you find the upgrades? PalmOne´s website?
