.....and there are other rumors from equally reliable sources that say that
there will be NO PalmOS6 on a Palm machine because Palm Inc. has decided to
go with Linux on its new PDAs. What to believe, what to believe!

Last I heard was that the "Palm" OS was to be a layer on top of a Linux
kernel - much like the old Win95/98. From the user's or (most) developer's
viewpoint it will be Palm OS - regardless of what's underneath.

It might just sit on top of a UNIX kernel rather than Linux. Here is the
relevant report, which is somewhat outdated:

I think they won't put a camera in the T|T6 - the Zire line is more likely to
get a higher res camera in its next model as the Zire line currently have a
camera and are more aimed at people who want that feature. The Tungstens have
until now been more aimed at business people who want wireless connectivity for
checking email on the go and the ability to view Microsoft documents in native
format - not that I can see the use in the latter.

Not even the opposite of the rumors. /PaulN

You mean a PalmOS GUI windowing Linux, like Mac OSX does to BSD?

Higher resolution on the Zire camera line won't help if they don't improve the
lens system, and I'm not sure how to do that and keep a small PDA case size.
Being a Zire 71 owner I was always disappointed with the fuzzy pictures. I
thought it was because of the Z71's low resolution camera. But when I got my
Zire 72 with the higher 1.2 MP resolution camera, I was again disappointed. Sure
the pictures had more pixels and were lot's bigger on the PC computer screen,
but they were still not clear. I do enjoy the using video snapshots on the Z72
so the upgrade wasn't a total wash, but getting an even higher resolution on the
new Z73 without somehow improving the lens system may not be that much of an
improvement...

Not exactly like that.

The relationship of OS X and BSD is that both sit atop the Mach kernel.
They are mostly independent. The APIs that support OS X applications
mostly don't have anything to do with BSD, and the traditional BSD
stuff (i.e. basically a lot like POSIX stuff) is there on the BSD side.
So in OS X, there are kind of two different userlands on top of one
kernel (although I believe parts of the BSD kernel might still exist
on the kernel side of things, sitting atop Mach).

Meanwhile, on Palm OS, it would appear to be a simpler arrangement
with Linux. The Linux kernel would replace the Palm OS kernel that
already exists, just as the kernel has been replaced 3 or 4 times
already. But, probably there would be no Linux stuff in the userland
area. The Linux kernel will be there, but that does not mean that
all the GNU utilities (like bash, ls, cron, etc.) will be there.
It could very well just be the Palm OS stuff on the userland side
and Linux might only be on the kernel side. So, you would not be
able to take Linux applications and recompile them for Palm OS,
because there wouldn't be, for example, a libc. At least that's
how I understand it.

Yes, if the camera could be improved to allow you to use the files to print good
clear 4x6 snapshots I would be willing to pay considerably more. But since I
pocket carry, I really don't want anything larger or heavier than the Z72. And
since I doubt they can improve the camera lens without making it larger, I
probably wouldn't buy one anyway. I mean look at the boat they made making the
memory larger on the LD... ;)

No. Palmsource has not acquired China MobileSoft just for fun.

I don't understand where you see any sign of a Unix other than Linux in
this page...

The source I heard said a fusion reactor rather than fission! Let's
see...1000000 deg, to sustain the reaction...It might be a tad warm carrying
it around in your pocket.

Well, I'm not. AAMOF, if I could have gotten the Treo 650 without a
camera, I would have. Phones and PDAs are allowed in a courthouse,
cameras are not. I was forced to leave my Treo with lobby security
when I was in for jury duty a few weeks ago.

And as I indicated elsewhere, I have a small decent quality camera I
usually carry with me, I generally have no use for the one on my PDA.

If they could have done that with flash instead of a hard drive, it
probably would have been smaller. For that matter, my iPod has more
hard drive storage and is smaller...

Good point. I'll remember to take one of my non-camera PDAs along the next time
I have jury duty. During my last jury duty (Grand Jury for 4 months straight) I
used my (modern at the time) IIIxe. The only problem I had with that was trying
to keep the security people at the courthouse entrance from dropping it... 8-O

I pocket carry mine Z72 everywhere so the camera has come in very handy at times
when I wouldn't have otherwise had one. I seldom carry my mp3 jukebox any more
because the Z72 (with large cards) has pretty much replaced it. So it would be
nice to say the same for the camera.

I think price was the problem. 4G of flash costs substantially more than 4G of
hard drive and I doubt they could successfully sell LD's for over $500. Compared
to PPC's, feature for feature, the LD is quite overpriced now...
