If I have Tungsten E and E2 users, is it possible to hotsynch both the E and
E2 using the E2 desktop software?

The E desktop software is already installed...(older system).  Assuming I
can use both with the same desktop, do I install the newer E2 desktop
software to overwrite the existing installation? (on Windows XP)?

If I use 2 user names -1 for the E and the other for the E2, can I start
with the same contact information for both users? -That is, give both users
the current contact information that is currently in the E, and then have
them differ as new contacts are added.  How would I do this?

How do I get add-on programs from the E (such as AvantGo) to be installed on
both the E and the E2 if I update the desktop software?

Hope these questions are clear enough.

Thanks

I don't have this setup, but I just replaced my old HandEra 330 with an
E2, and I'll try to address your questions. If I'm wrong about
anything, this being the Internet, I'll be promptly flamed with the
correct info.

There should be no problem syncing different models to the same
computer, assuming the user names are different (as you state below
they are).

Yes, you'll probably need to install the E2 software. I had 4.1 (at
this point, I should mention that I have Mac OS X, but this should be
the same for both platforms) and it still synced the E2 with no
problem. But extras, such as the Media 'Send to Handheld' program (on
Windows, I believe there's a desktop Media program) weren't a part of
my existing installation so I had to install the new version over it
for that to work.

I believe all versions of Palm Desktop are backward-compatible with
older devices, so that shouldn't be a problem for you. And the E's not
that old.

This could be a little trickier; maybe someone has a better idea of how
to do this. Here's how I would do it: get a file utility such as
TealMover (or the free Filez) and beam the E's address book database
over to the E2. But this may not work correctly, because Palm's always
messing with the fields in these db's and they may have a different
structure in the E2. If it doesn't work, and no one else has a better
idea, you may have to beam each record over individually from within
the Contacts app. But this could get old quickly. :)

Make sure you have the Backup conduit set to back up everything, then
sync the E. Go into the Palm folder for the E's user name, find the
Backup folder in it. Open the E2's user in the desktop software, open
the 'Install Handheld Files...' window from the 'HotSync' menu (I hope
these are the same in the Windows version), and drag all the
programs/files you want from the E's backup folder to the 'Install'
window. HotSync the E2, and all the files should be there. (But be
careful -- make sure all the files don't exceed the 26 or so mb in the
E2's memory.) For programs that need support files, make sure those go
over as well. And for anything registered with the E's user name,
you'll need to buy another license for the new device.

BTW, you may just want to go to PalmGear or Handango or somewhere to
get the latest versions of the software. If you haven't updated lately,
the newer versions may work better with the E2's NVFS memory.

Likewise with my answers. Criticisms, anyone?

That's right. As long as you keep them under separate user names, which
define separate databases.

From www.palmone.com, "the Palm Desktop 4.1.4 synchronizes with Palm
Tungsten series, Palm Zire series, Palm i700 series, Palm m500 series,
Palm m100 series, Palm VII series, Palm V series, Palm III series and
PalmPilot handhelds." That's for Windows systems, which I assume you're
using.

You'll find answers to most questions on that Web site.

Yes. The user names represent separate databases and changes to one do
not affect the other.

The desktop software allows you to select the username/database with
which to synchronize. Make sure you make the selection that matches the
device.

I would get both PDAs hot syncing without issue. Then, on the Palm
desktop, with the user for the E selected, I would select all records
for the contact book and export them. On the Palm desktop, select the
user for the E2, and import the previously exported contacts. Set the
address hot sync conduit for the E2 user to "desktop overwrites hand
held" (but don't make that the default!) and hot sync the E2.

See my recent post (Saturday) about the problems I had with Documents to Go
after synching a T & a T5 to the same machine.

It upgraded both machines to the latest (i.e. the T5 version) of the
software, which was incompatible with my old Palm T and refused to run. Do
the E & the E2 run the same version of third-party software? If not, you may
have problems?

Yes! That's much better. I don't know what I was thinking. :)

It's the only way I know that would work going "forward" (ie, from an
older app to a newer app). I wonder if it work going from a newer app
to an older one, since the desktop client is the where the conversions
are done?
