Acer Aspire 5741 No power or lights
Forum Laptops & Notebooks : General Discussion Acer Aspire 5741 No power or lights
Hi im new to these forms but was hoping to get some help with my acer aspire 5741. The laptop is completely apart, and im pretty technical. when plugged in and/or with battery in there is now power, no lights, nothing. I checked the Power jack and i am getting 19 volts coming through. normally when plugged in a light comes on, but there is no light. the power brick is green and the laptop is getting power through the dc jack. i am really stuck on this and dont want to buy a new laptop. what should i do?
Hi
When you say APART i hope you dont mean in pieces ??
All the best Brett
apart as in motherboard out of the case, so i took the top and bottom covers off, and the lcd. only thing connected to the motherboard right now is a cpu and cooling system (yes i had ram in when starting up)
Hi
If you have no experience on repairing laptops.....do this....
Very carefully collect all the pieces and every screw and take it to a local laptop repair company and pay them to fix it....
A laptop is NOT a PC....you cannot just strip it down and put it back together and expect it to work again unless you do it for a living...as I do...
All the best Brett
ok, well im 14. i know how to do bga reflows, i repair xboxs, blackberries and other cellphones. im technically smart so im gonna fix this myself. thanks.
do you have any tips or any help at all brett? it would be greatly appreciated. im not trying to be ignorant, i simply would like to do this myself as i believe i can and do not want to spend 250 dollars on a new motherboard when the laptop cost 350.

I am a computer technician as well and it does sound like you know what you are doing. If you managed to get the mainboard out, test voltage after the jack at the board, you have ruled out the easy fixes. Only other possibility besides mainboard is cmos battery. I have seen a dead one do wierd things. Other that I would do ebay for used mb if the cost isn't too high. Good luck
i measured the voltage out of the power brick, 19.something, out of the jack (unplugged from mobo) 19. something, at the jack connected to the motherboard 19.something. i dont know were else to check, i also thought the cmos battery might be a problem so after posting this i used a hot air reflow station to unsolder the battery, power cycle (nothing) then put it back on and still nothing, im out of ideas and motherboards are 200 dollars.
also is it a possibility that the cpu is damaged?
did you check the volts on the battery?

the volts on the cmos batter or on the powersupply battery? i do believe i checked both and they seemed good, but i can recheck for something specific. Buying a new motherboard isnt an option for me right now, so i need to fix it some other way.
the volts of the cmos battery, should be 3 volts
2.7 volts while connected to board.

I am no expert, but it might be worth a try at replacing the battery
unfortunately i dont have another one as the batter is soldered to, but i do believe the voltage is acceptable, as when plugged in the standby voltages on the board are 3.3 volts. im thinking if flushing with isopropyl alcholol doesnt fix it, ill leave it tonight and then start reflowing tomorrow morning.
Hi
I am sorry but my advice above stands....
You seem very bright, but you are 14....you have no qualifications in Electronics and have obviously not got the skill to fix this or you wouldnt be asking here...
Take it to a pro...
Sometimes in life you need to realise you have overeached yourself....an adult would admit that to him or herself and go to a Pro...
But your choice....
All the best Brett
if you have read my previous comments i have said i am not taking it in, i am asking for help on how to fix this, not for advice of taking it in.

Hi
Ah the arrogance of youth....
Your choice as I said....
You wont be able to fix this, to do it you need equipment you dont have (like an external laptop mobo tester) and a lot of knowledge you dont have...
My prediction.... it wont fix unless you buy another mobo and even then it wont work unless you pay a Pro to fit it....
I will keep an eye on this thread with interest...
All the best Brett
"Ah the arrogance of youth" ive heard that from my mom a couple times before hahaha. Anyways im gonna keep working at it? is there any certain parts that i should check, that would go wrong?
Hi
Well at least you dont give up lollll...
You check ALL of them....
All the best Brett
Hi
Thats the point PRECISELY...you dont know and without around 5 years of training , I cant tell you....
All the best Brett
why cant you tell me? what certain parts should be checked, should i be checking mosfets or measuring the voltages on certain things?

Hi
This is my last comment on this thread as I could be using my time helping others who actually LISTEN...
I already told you...you check EVERYTHING !
Thats every part
Thats every track on the mobo
Thats every connection for resistance
etc etc etc.....
EVERYTHING....
All the best Brett
ok brett one last question, can you direct me to a forum where people will help me fix my problem, not just tell me to take it in to a shop?
if anyone else is reading this some help would be greatly appreciated.
I was just reading through and thought the same thing as bryce. Brett928s2 if you really are a certified electrical repair man why don't you give him some pointers on where to check next. From what I see you don't know jack. If your really a certified PC repair man then you should absolutely know what to check. Unless your not really that good at your job. I'm currently studying Computer Engineering and I do know that enough to say that you should be able to guide him but instead your being a total jackass. Also if the only cert you have is you A+ cert then your absolutely no good to this kid anyway. Bryce I'm just taking a shot in the dark but have you tried testing voltage at the battery charge points? Take the batt. out and test to see if you can get any voltage through the board at all. I've heard that sometimes this test can tell you if you have a bad board or not but it's not 100% accurate. It depends on the way the power pathways are laid out. I really whish I knew more but I'm afraid that I haven't made it through digital devices just yet. Maybe if you could wait another year until I graduate then I could help a little more? sorry man but if I were you I'd just go somewhere else.
twstd1 thank you so much, someone whos trying to help. i tested the voltages were the battery connects and there is current there. i have 3.3 volts at various points on the board, which is the standby voltage needed for the laptop to power up. what concerns me is that a light should be coming on when there is power connected to the laptop, and ive checked and power is coming in at the dc jack, but i dont know what else to check from there to see why its not going through. i have somebody that i do work for repairing xboxs and he runs a pc repair shop so i am gonna go talk to him, but computer repair is crazy expensive so i would prefer to do it myself. that being said im kinda at the point were im just gonna pay the 150 dollars or whatever it costs to get it fixxed, but im still looking at my options.
Well if your gonna pay that much just get it checked out why don't you just buy a new mobo and put it in yourself? If I were in your shoes that's what I would do. Why pay somebody to tell you what I'm sure we already know when you could buy a new mobo and replace it yourself? The only thing that sucks is that your windows will not work anymore because of the new mobo so I hope you have your own copy. I can't tell you for sure that it's the mobo but I'm pretty sure it is. I've heard that acers seem to have a lot of problems in that area.
Also how old is your laptop? I'd try getting a replacement CMOS battery and trying that before anything else. And also that way you know you have a good CMOS batt for the replacement mobo if you have to get one, lol.
i guess the cmos battery is worth a try, but i got lucky (sarcasm) and a new mobo costs 175 for the cheapest one i can find.
ok i know this problem and its a very easy fix put the laptop top back together because there is nothing wrong with it lol.
step 1 leave out the power charger and take out the battery leave for 10 mins
step 2 press the power button for more than 20 secs
step 3 only put the battrey back in and press the power button until you see the light for the battery starting to flash KEEP HOLDONG THE POWER BUTTON IN DO NOT RELEASE IT and plug the power cable back in let go of the power button and watch it spring back into life.
ps. lets hope this done the trick
