what is the best virus program?

I really like Panda Platinum, especially since Toey recommended it. He gave me a long explanation over Norton, and I tried it out. I'm sold...the performance and speed is awesome, and I'm happy with it.

I still have version 6, but Toey's upgraded to version 7, which looks very polished.

If you want free though, I haven't heard anything wrong with <A HREF="http://www.grisoft.com" target="_new">AVG Antivirus</A>.

The new version <i>is</i> better, definitely. The interface is much cleaner and easier to use, the program is faster, and the permanent protection(s) (e-mail and Internet) are around 75% less memory intensive. I also noticed that updating is a much easier thing to accomplish, and ZoneAlarm Pro doesn't have to be temporarily disabled to get the updates, which sometimes occurred when the Anti-Virus itself was upgraded to a new build.

I'm happy with the change ... this is what I hoped the 6.xx versions would become, and Sygate has managed to keep me sold on the program. It's ready for consumer desktops now, IMHO, and works very well with WinXP. It even has sound files with the downloadable version this time around, which sound, um, commanding.

Have had no problems with it. Your boot time takes a bit longer but that's about it. Doesn't use as much resources as Norton and it has definitely saved my system a couple of times. I still have the free version but I'm deliberating right now if I should get the Pro.

I gotta agree with AVG - I've been using the free version for a year or two and I never usually even notice that it is there (one indicator of a good antivirus I suppose).
What's different in the Pro edition these days? I seem to recall it used to unlock the more advanced interface options to do more sophisticated scheduling and stuff - this still the case?

From what I've read a better GUI and more options. You ask me, I'm happy with the free version. The more complex a program gets, the more fallible it gets. Take a look at cars these days.

That's another thing I like about it. It works quietly in the background and only asks now and then if I should accept the update. Wish Windows was like this! LOL

wouldn't boot or would hang or cause any other gripes the newer programs have? Ain't seen any. 'Cause the program was simple!

As a matter of fact, I went back to my old cell phone because I didn't like my new one. Too much options and accessories. All I've really used is the SMS service and the phonebook.

Yeah, simplicity is always to be favoured over having all the twiddly bits. Though I must admit I like to be able to change the cover colour on my cellphone

Just as long as the AV keeps my PC clean I'm happy. I do hope they keep it as a free product, I think some other AV called something like 'InnoculateIT' stopped being free or disappeared a while back. I tried all the free AVs I could get my hands on, and I wasn't at all impressed by most of them for various reasons. It's probably only a matter of time before Microsoft starts building an AV straight into Windows anyway (like they are doing with the firewall in XP). I think they tried putting an AV into DOS many years back, but that it didn't work.

So you guys really think Panda is the best anti-virus software out there. I know I have tried Norton and it has gone the way Mcafee has gone... South. I have a bootvirus on my server only System Commander has been able to tell me I have. I seem not to be able to extracted with Norton since it can't even detect the stupid thing. I just have to make sure I can extract a valid clean version of this Panda software and try to see if it is worth the comments you guys have given it.

You guys have any other suggestions on Anti-virus software I would like to know. Doesn't matter payment. I rather pay and get rid of problems than getting something for free that just takes space on my computer and does nothing else.

It's similar to the way Symantec operates ... you buy a new version, and get virus definition updates and program upgrades for a year. After that, you can either pay for a completely new version of the program when it is released, or just pay for continued access to the virus definition files (and any upgrades that might be released, if that happens.) For instance, version 6 was upgraded a few weeks ago, but not long after, version 7 hit the market. But whether or not version 6 will continue to be upgraded remains to be seen.

Note: You are not just restricted to running the update portion of the program to get virus files and upgrades; Panda has a FTP site that is accessible to registered users, which can be handy, at times.
