I am looking for a 5-6 lb note book with a 15 inch screen, 7200rpm 40 or 60 gigabyte hard drive, a 1.6 ghz Pentium M and an ATI 9600 pro. Is any one making it?

EDIT: sorry, this doesn't have a ATI 9600 in it ... I missed that part of your question. It's a 9000 ... sry.

you might read through their forums as well and see what people are saying about it. i've played with it and it is nice -- but, under the left palm, it does get semi-warm and that was with a 5400rpm drive. It is bareable but not sure how a 7200rpm drive will fare.

Thanks for the information, I have never heard about Powerpro Notebooks. As you note they are not ati 9600's.

I think what I am looking for is a notebook and the high end graphics are in the desktop replacement category.

Arima is a Taiwan based ODM manufacturer of notebook computers (and other products). Last year HP/Compaq was a major reseller of Arima laptops. I have been trying to find out which U.S. companies will be offering the Arima M620 DC laptop under their own brands but so far I have been unsuccessful. I suspect that the product launch is so recent that the business arrangements have not yet been finalized.

Here is some information on new widescreen notebooks, some of which have ATi 9600 (aka M10) graphics and the Pentium M (Centrino CPU). See the Arima W620 and the Gigabyte N601 in particular:

You'd be hard pressed to find a notebook computer that is actually manufactured in the U.S.

Dell buys their notebooks almost exclusively from Taiwan based manufacturers:

Last year, HP/Compaq bought notebooks from Arima, a Taiwan based manufacturer. They recently started ordering from Inventec, another Taiwan based manufacturer:

I was born, raised, and live in the U.S. I am not bashing my own country, just stating how the notebook market works.

Dell and Compaq buy from Compal (among others), which is mainly based in Malaysia. There is also a small production plant in Ireland. But none in the US, as far as I know.

How about a 5.3lb notebook computer with 1.5 GHz Pentium M, ATi 9600 64MB graphics, 15" wide angle SXGA+ screen, 60 GB hard drive, and CD-RW/DVD combo drive? The manufacturer claims a battery life of 6 1/2 hours on the standard 6 cell battery and up to 10 hours on the available 9 cell battery.

ok my mistake, i meant to say that i would rather buy a US based company , regardless where they get their laptops. Simply for simplicity's sake, i dont want to pay extra for shipping or i dont want warrante/support hassles. That often happens if you buy from a foreign based company (maybe not so from canadian companies, since they are close). And if you're buying a laptop, you would need support even more.
