Having had a new Zire 72 for a couple of weeks, I decided that it was
time to try out the capability for making short movies with sound. When
I did a subsequent hot sync, the MPEG4 file appeared in the folder where
it was supposed to be. But neither Windows Media Player nor Quicktime
nor Real Player would play it. I got messages that they did not have
the right codec.

I then looked at the documentation on the CD that came with the Zire. It
mentioned that while the files would transfer to the Mac, they could not
be played on it with any of the standard software! It then made a
reference to a tech support page on the PalmOne web page. This gave
links to some sources of Mac software, e.g. Version Tracker, claiming
that there were all sorts of suitable third-party products. The nearest
I got to a solution was a download of a codec which allegedly would make
QuickTime work. It didn't. Other players were pretty hard to find, and
the few that I did find would not play the files.

Suggestions, anyone?

What you describe sounds like creating a video on the handheld and the
transferring it to the MAC.

I assume, you want the opposite direction.

in brief, I suggest:

1 get "handbrake" for the MAC (freeware); get MMplayer for Palm (costs
money, but in my opinion is worth the price)

2 convert the DVD you want to see on the Palm. Make sure to select "avi"
for video format. Make sure to select target size smaller than your
Memory card size. Make sure to scale the Image to a size between 160
pixels wide to 320 pixels wide, try out results that work for you.

instead of 1+2, you may want to create your own videos with your camera

3 install the video right away on the SD card

4 watch video using MMplayer

Alternatively, it should be possible to get Kinoma do the same thing.
I couldn't get it do do the same job with the same ease. For some
reason, my resulting Kinoma files would play jumpy and be about twice as
large as the avi files directly.

Kinoma doesn't support DivX.

I simply wanted, after transferring the video clip to the Mac, to be
able to view and hear it on the Mac. Using Version Tracker, I tried
three different search critera: mpeg4 player, asp player, and video
player. Of the first two, one led me to Windows Media Player v 9, which
does not work, one led me to a plug-in for QuickTime, which also did not
work, and the third turned up a player called VLC, which did work.
Problem solved. But I'm pretty disgusted that the more specific search
criteria turned up nothing.
